The National Holiday in Sceaux: Republican celebration in a historic setting
The town of Sceaux celebrates the National Holiday every year in one of the most prestigious settings in the southern Paris region: the town's historic gardens, in the shade of the Château de Sceaux. On the evening of July 13th, the Parc de l'Orangerie brings the people of Sceaux together for a festive program that combines republican tradition and popular entertainment in an exceptional heritage environment.
The Parc de l'Orangerie: a historic jewel for the celebration
Sceaux is world-renowned for its Departmental Estate, one of the most beautiful French formal gardens in Île-de-France. Designed under Louis XIV for the Duke of Maine, this 181-hectare park with its château, waterfalls, ponds, and lime tree-lined avenues provides a sumptuous setting for national festivities. The Parc de l'Orangerie, a more intimate space nestled within the town, offers a perfect backdrop for the popular ball and fireworks.
This combination of historical heritage and republican celebration gives the Fête Nationale de Sceaux a special dimension: celebrating France also means celebrating the beauty of its gardens and monuments, a common heritage for all citizens.
A festive program for all generations
The evening of July 13th begins at 7:30 PM at the Kiosque de l'Orangerie with a program designed for all generations:
The fairground games welcome families with children from the beginning of the evening, offering a warm and fun fairground atmosphere. The popular ball is in full swing around the kiosk, with music and dancing in an intergenerational atmosphere. A live concert entertains the evening — in 2025, the band YOE delivered a quality musical performance — attracting music lovers and variety fans.
At 10 PM, the torchlight procession winds through the park in a luminous and symbolic procession, one of the most poetic moments of the evening. This traditional parade, accompanied by music, recalls the military and patriotic origins of July 14th and crystallizes collective emotion.
The fireworks: the climax at 11 PM
At 11 PM, the spectacle reaches its peak with the fireworks display in the Parc de l'Orangerie. In the sumptuous setting of the Sceaux gardens, illuminated for the occasion, multicolored rockets follow each other in a precise and well-crafted choreography. The sound and light created by the fireworks transform the park into an open-air stage of rare beauty, offering all spectators a moment of magic suspended in time.
The complete freeness of the event is one of its fundamental values: no tickets to buy, no paid stands. Everyone can settle freely on the lawns and paths of the park, in the most republican spirit possible.
Sceaux, a city of culture and republican pride
Sceaux is a city with an exceptionally rich cultural identity. Just a stone's throw from the Domaine de Sceaux, the town hosts major festivals every summer, such as Opéra en Plein Air or Sceaux Jazz Festival. The National Holiday naturally fits into this dense cultural calendar, adding a popular and civic dimension to the artistic offerings of the summer season.
The 20,000 inhabitants of Sceaux are particularly attached to their festive traditions and the beauty of their living environment. The National Holiday, meticulously organized each year by the municipality, is an expression of this local and national pride, where the joy of living together finds a happy and shared expression.
