The Festival de Marne: thirty-nine years dedicated to living song

The Festival de Marne was born in 1987 from an unlikely and magnificent encounter: that of Jean Ferrat, a resident of Ivry-sur-Seine and a guiding figure of committed French song, with the elected officials of the General Council of Val-de-Marne. Together, they were convinced that a working-class department on the outskirts of Paris could and should offer its inhabitants access to great living song, without social or geographical barriers. The first edition, modest, lasted only a weekend under a simple tent erected on a wasteland in Ivry-sur-Seine.

Thirty-nine years later, the festival has changed scale without losing its soul. It now makes the heart of more than twenty towns in Val-de-Marne beat, from Nogent-sur-Marne to Villejuif, from Alfortville to Champigny-sur-Marne, mobilizing several dozen performance venues, from the municipal party hall to the major professional stage. The festival remains supported by the Department of Val-de-Marne, guarantor of its mission of accessibility and artistic excellence.

An audacious and eclectic program

The Festival de Marne is not limited to traditional French song. Its programming, renowned for its audacity and diversity, embraces the entire spectrum of French-language vocal music: poetic and committed song, popular variety, rap and hip-hop, reggae, afrobeat, Creole music, sung jazz, new emerging scenes. Each edition attempts to build a dialogue between generations and aesthetics, bringing together established artists and discoveries.

Among the artists who have marked recent editions are Alain Souchon, La Grande Sophie, Jeanne Cherhal, Youssoupha, Kassav', Keziah Jones, Gringe, and many other artists representative of the richness of contemporary French-language music. The program also includes concerts for young audiences, through the Mon Mini Festival de Marne segment, which delights young and old with colorful and participatory musical shows.

A festival rooted in the territory

One of the strongest specificities of the Festival de Marne is its deep inscription in the fabric of the towns and communes of Val-de-Marne. Unlike festivals that concentrate their programming in a single location, the Festival de Marne unfolds itinerantly in an ever-increasing number of venues, cultural facilities, and public spaces. This dispersed geography ensures that residents of each town have access to at least one concert or show near their home, often at very affordable prices.

The festival is also a tool for promoting local scenes and artists from the region, by offering young musicians from Val-de-Marne opening slots and creation residencies. It thus contributes to the emergence of a vibrant local artistic scene, in connection with the permanent cultural facilities of the department.

History and memory of French song

The Festival de Marne maintains a strong link with the memory of French song. The figure of Jean Ferrat, its founder, remains at the heart of the festival''s identity, as a reminder that song can be both popular and committed, accessible and poetic. Several editions have paid tribute to deceased artists or to chapters in the history of French song, thus building a living collective memory.

With nearly 40,000 spectators welcomed each year in all partner communes, the Festival de Marne is one of the most attended cultural events in Val-de-Marne. It represents an original model of a decentralized and popular festival, serving cultural democratization.
