Classical music concerts in the Romanesque churches of Bocage Bourbonnais
Since 2012, the Classique en Bocage festival has been inviting music lovers and the curious to discover what the old stones have to whisper in the heart of summer. Supported by the Communauté de Communes du Bocage Bourbonnais, in collaboration with the association 88 and the Département de l'Allier, this travelling festival offers a series of high-quality classical music concerts every year in the Romanesque churches and heritage sites scattered throughout the bocage.
The program of Classique en Bocage is distinguished by its eclecticism and richness. From the baroque repertoire to contemporary sounds, including romanticism, jazz, and gypsy music, the festival offers a wide variety of musical panoramas. Every Sunday in the summer, at 5 p.m., about thirty musicians — string quartets, brass ensembles, voice and piano duos, baroque ensembles with harpsichord, guitarists, oboists — perform in a different heritage setting.
The concerts take place in the churches of the bocage villages: Le Montet, Deux-Chaises, Buxières-les-Mines, Châtel-de-Neuvre, Rocles, Bourbon-l'Archambault, Saint-Aubin-le-Monial, Saint-Hilaire, Meillers, and other towns in the area. Each location offers a unique acoustic and a remarkable architectural setting that enhances the performed works.
Beyond the musical quality, Classique en Bocage cultivates a spirit of conviviality dear to Bocage Bourbonnais. Each concert is followed by a friendly reception offered by the community of communes, a privileged moment for exchange between the public and the artists. This summer event helps to keep the Romanesque heritage of the territory alive and to build links between residents, visitors, and musicians.
The Bocage Bourbonnais holds a heritage of remarkable Romanesque churches, often little-known, whose acoustic and architectural qualities make them perfect settings for chamber music. The festival thus allows these buildings to be rediscovered in a new light, combining musical emotion with the beauty of centuries-old stones. It is an invitation to explore an authentic and preserved rural territory, rich in history and character.
Classique en Bocage returns for its 15th edition during the summer of 2026. True to its formula, the travelling festival will offer a series of classical music concerts every Sunday at 5 p.m. in the Romanesque churches of Bocage Bourbonnais. The program, which will mix baroque, classical, romantic, jazz, and world music as every year, will be announced in spring 2026.
The concerts will take place in various towns in the area, allowing the public to discover or rediscover the rich Romanesque heritage of the Bocage. Each event will be followed by the traditional friendly reception.
The festival takes place in various towns in Bocage Bourbonnais, in the northwest of the Allier department. Bourbon-l'Archambault, a central town in the area, is accessible from Moulins (about 25 km) and from the A71 motorway (Montmarault or Saint-Amand-Montrond exit).
Concerts take place every Sunday in the summer, from early July to late August, at 5 p.m. Entry to the church is from 4:30 p.m.
Admission: 10 euros per concert. Free for children under 12 years old. Each concert is followed by a complimentary friendly reception.
