Classical music concerts in the Romanesque churches of Bocage Bourbonnais
Classique en Bocage is a travelling classical music festival organised by the Communauté de Communes du Bocage Bourbonnais, in collaboration with association 88 and the Département de l'Allier. Every summer, from June to September, a series of high-quality concerts takes place in the Romanesque churches and heritage sites of the Bocage Bourbonnais. From baroque music to jazz, including romantic repertoire, tango, and choral singing, the festival offers a wide range of musical discoveries in the cool embrace of ancient stones, followed by a friendly drink after each concert.
Since 2012, the Classique en Bocage festival has invited music lovers and curious visitors to discover what the old stones have to whisper in the heart of summer. Supported by the Communauté de Communes du Bocage Bourbonnais, in collaboration with association 88 and the Département de l'Allier, this travelling festival annually offers a series of high-quality classical music concerts in the Romanesque churches and heritage sites scattered throughout the bocage, from late June to mid-September.
The Classique en Bocage programme is distinguished by its eclecticism and richness. From baroque repertoire to contemporary sounds, including romanticism, jazz, tango, and choral singing, the festival offers a musical panorama of great diversity. Concerts most often take place on Sundays at 5 PM, with a few evening events: string quartets, brass ensembles, vocal groups, piano recitals, voice and instrument duos, guitarists, and oboists perform in turn in a different heritage setting.
Concerts are held in the churches of the bocage villages: Noyant-d'Allier, Gipcy, Treban, Saint-Menoux, Meillard, Le Montet, Bourbon-l'Archambault, Saint-Aubin-le-Monial, Saint-Hilaire, Buxières-les-Mines and other communes in the territory. Each venue offers unique acoustics and a remarkable architectural setting that magnify the works performed.
Beyond musical quality, Classique en Bocage cultivates a spirit of conviviality dear to the Bocage Bourbonnais. Each concert is followed by a friendly drink, a privileged moment of exchange between the audience and the artists. This summer event helps bring the Romanesque heritage of the territory to life and forge links between residents, visitors, and musicians.
The Bocage Bourbonnais conceals a remarkable, often little-known, heritage of Romanesque churches, whose acoustic and architectural qualities make them perfect settings for chamber music. The festival thus allows these edifices to be rediscovered in a new light, combining musical emotion with the beauty of centuries-old stones. It is an invitation to explore an authentic and preserved rural territory, rich in history and character.
The 15th edition of Classique en Bocage takes place from June 21st to September 13th, 2026, in the Romanesque churches and heritage sites of the Bocage Bourbonnais. The program includes: a dozen classical music concerts, from baroque to romanticism, including jazz, tango, and choral singing, in twelve communes of the territory. Most concerts are free admission.
Classique en Bocage returns for its 15th edition from June 21st to September 13th, 2026. The 2026 program combines baroque, romanticism, choral singing, jazz, tango, and chamber music: a concert exploring "fakes" in classical music, a musical tale for the whole family, a bandoneon duo, string quartets, the Choir and Orchestra of the Grandes Écoles (40 voices), the Laureates of the Fondation Gautier Capuçon, recitals dedicated to Bach, Chopin, and Saint-Saëns, and the rediscovery of the Bourbonnais harmonium. Each event is followed by the traditional friendly drink.
The festival takes place in various communes of the Bocage Bourbonnais, in the north-west of the Allier department. Bourbon-l'Archambault, a central commune of the territory, is accessible from Moulins (approximately 25 km) and from the A71 motorway (Montmarault or Saint-Amand-Montrond exit).
