The national festival of cafés-cultures, born in Nantes
Created in 2003 by the Collectif Culture Bar-Bars, a national federation of cafés-cultures founded in Nantes in 1999, the Culture Bar-Bars festival is the second national cultural event after the Fête de la Musique. Every last weekend of November, hundreds of bars, concert cafés, and cultural clubs simultaneously open their stages across France to offer free live music concerts in a friendly and warm atmosphere. In Nantes, the historical birthplace of the collective, the festival transforms a hundred establishments into ephemeral performance venues, from Le Chat Noir to Les Fleurs du Malt, including Le Feu Bar, Le Zygo Bar, and Le Warehouse. The programming, deliberately eclectic and multidisciplinary, mixes rock, French chanson, jazz, blues, hip-hop, world music, slam, stand-up, drag shows, and exhibitions. With over 70 participating cities, 230 venues, 3,000 artists, and 160,000 festival-goers during the 2025 edition, Culture Bar-Bars celebrates the irreplaceable cultural richness of small artistic venues and defends their essential role in the vitality of territories.
The Culture Bar-Bars festival is inseparable from the Collectif Culture Bar-Bars, a national federation of cafés and cultural clubs created in Nantes in 1999. Faced with the fragility of small artistic venues — concert bars, cafés-cultures, clubs — the collective unites these establishments to defend their cultural and social role. In 2003, it launched the first edition of the festival, a national event held simultaneously in dozens of French cities on the last weekend of November.
The principle of Culture Bar-Bars is simple and powerful: for several days, cafés-cultures open their doors for free concerts and shows, transforming each bar into a vibrant stage. In Nantes, the festival takes over about a hundred establishments spread across all neighborhoods: Le Chat Noir in the heart of Commerce, Le Feu Bar on Rue Maréchal Joffre, Le Zygo Bar on Rue des Olivettes, Les Fleurs du Malt, Le Warehouse, Le Dynamo, and many others. Festival-goers wander freely from one bar to another, discovering artists from all musical backgrounds throughout the evening.
The richness of the festival lies in the diversity of its programming, reflecting the unique identity of each participating venue:
Beyond the celebration, Culture Bar-Bars carries a strong political message: cafés-cultures are essential cultural living spaces, "cocoons of freedom" in the words of the collective. They offer emerging artists their first stages, audiences a unique proximity to creation, and neighborhoods irreplaceable social spaces. The festival highlights this often-unrecognized cultural richness and advocates for the recognition and support of these establishments by public authorities.
Since its creation, the festival has continued to grow. From a few pioneering cities in 2003, it now brings together over 70 cities across France. The 2025 edition, extended for the first time to five days, brought together 3,000 artists, 636 events in 230 venues, and over 160,000 festival-goers. In Nantes, the festival remains one of the highlights of the end of the year, mobilizing the community of bar owners and programmers and attracting a loyal and curious audience.
24th edition of the Culture Bar-Bars festival. The national festival of cafés-cultures returns on the last weekend of November to celebrate live music in the bars of Nantes and all over France. Free admission.
The Culture Bar-Bars festival returns for its 24th edition from November 25th to 29th, 2026, true to its tradition of the last weekend of November. Following the success of the 2025 edition extended to five days, the longer format is being repeated to allow festival-goers to fully enjoy the abundant programming of the cafés-cultures.
In Nantes, the collective's emblematic bars — Le Chat Noir, Le Feu Bar, Le Zygo Bar, Les Fleurs du Malt, Le Warehouse, and many other establishments — will once again offer free concerts in a friendly and warm atmosphere. The programming, true to the festival's multidisciplinary spirit, will mix rock, French chanson, jazz, blues, hip-hop, world music, slam, stand-up, and exhibitions.
The Collectif Culture Bar-Bars continues to champion the irreplaceable role of small artistic venues in the French cultural landscape.
The festival takes place simultaneously in about a hundred bars, concert cafés, and cultural clubs in Nantes and the Nantes metropolitan area. Among the emblematic venues:
