Reconstitution of the great holiday departures on the mythical Nationale 7
Every two years in October, Lapalisse in the Allier region revives the legendary traffic jams of the 1950s-60s on the Nationale 7. Hundreds of vintage vehicles (cars, caravans, trucks, bicycles, scooters) parade through the town in retro costumes, recreating the atmosphere of the great holiday departures towards the French Riviera. Created in 2006 when the N7 was diverted, this festive event attracts over 30,000 visitors and features a vintage car elegance contest, a retro dance dinner, an old bicycle race, and numerous animations on the theme of the Trente Glorieuses.
The Nationale 7, nicknamed the "Holiday Road" or the "Blue Road," was for decades the main route connecting Paris to the French Riviera. Passing right through Lapalisse, it profoundly marked the identity of this small town in the Allier region. Every summer, thousands of holidaymakers stopped there, creating memorable traffic jams that remained etched in the collective memory. With the opening of the bypass in October 2006, the town decided to transform this nostalgia into a unique celebration in France.
The idea came from a meeting between the Communauté de Communes du Pays de Lapalisse and historian Thierry Dubois, passionate about the history of the N7. Together, they imagined a life-size recreation of the famous traffic jams of the 1950s-60s, during the peak holiday departure season. The name "Embouteillage Nationale 7" was registered with the National Institute of Industrial Property. The first edition, in 2006, was an immediate success, and the event quickly became a must-attend gathering for the region.
The heart of the "Embouteillage" is the grand parade: hundreds of vintage vehicles (cars, caravans, buses, trucks, bicycles, scooters of all makes) converge from all over France and even abroad to cross Lapalisse as they did in the 1950s-60s. Drivers and passengers are in period costumes, and scenes from the era are faithfully recreated: gendarmes with armbands, nuns in cornettes, mechanics in overalls, petrol pump attendants in caps. The atmosphere of the Trente Glorieuses fills the town's streets throughout the weekend.
Beyond the parade, the program offers numerous animations on the theme of the 1950s-60s: a vintage car elegance contest, an old bicycle race, a retro dance dinner with an orchestra, vehicle exhibitions, retro vendor stalls, and many surprises. The streets of Lapalisse transform into a real film set where every visitor becomes an actor in this bygone era. The event now attracts over 30,000 visitors from all over France and abroad, making Lapalisse the capital of automotive nostalgia for a weekend.
The 11th edition, scheduled from October 8 to 11, 2026, will celebrate the 20th anniversary of the "Nationale 7 Historique" event. An exceptional anniversary that promises an enriched program and surprises for all enthusiasts of the mythical road, vintage vehicles, and the French art of living in the 1950s-60s.
