The largest festival of maritime traditions in the Mediterranean — Sète, Hérault
Every two years, Escale à Sète gathers the largest fleet of traditional boats and tall ships in the Mediterranean on the quays and canals of the port of Sète, in Hérault. Organized by the Escale à Sète association since 2010, this maritime festival welcomes over 120 boats from around the world, dozens of international delegations, and nearly 400,000 to 500,000 visitors over one week.
Launched in 2010 by the Escale à Sète association, the event has become, in just a few editions, the most important gathering of maritime traditions in the Mediterranean. Every two years, in late March or early April, over 120 boats converge on the port of Sète: international tall ships, traditional Mediterranean sailing boats, lateen rigs, rowing boats, French Navy vessels, and historic crafts line the 2 km of quays transformed into thematic villages.
The event is entirely free (except for visits to the tall ships, which require a ticket). For one week, visitors can attend arrival and departure parades, recreated 18th-century naval battles, traditional rowing races, sea rescue demonstrations (SNSM, French Navy), Languedoc jousts, sea shanty concerts (listed as French intangible heritage), crew parades, knot-tying workshops, and activities in 11 to 12 thematic villages (solidarity, environment, gastronomy, culture, maritime professions).
The organization relies on nearly 400 volunteers and a wide network of partners: City of Sète, French Navy, SNSM, IFREMER, DRASSM, Conservatoire du littoral, Archipel de Thau Tourist Office, Occitanie region. Each edition highlights one or more guest countries (Italy in 2026), with dedicated villages, gastronomy, and specific flotillas.
The 2026 edition of Escale à Sète will take place from Tuesday, March 31 to Monday, April 6, 2026 on the quays and canals of the port of Sète, in Hérault. This edition honors Italy (seven Italian regions represented) and celebrates the 400th anniversary of the French Navy, with over 120 boats expected, including a first Indian participation (INS Sudarshini, a three-masted barque).
For this 2026 edition, Italy is the guest of honor at Escale à Sète. Seven Italian regions (Liguria, Campania, Lazio, and others) are represented in a dedicated village, echoing Sète's significant community of Italian origin. Delegations are also expected from Spain, Slovenia, Romania, Mauritania, Japan, India, Corsica, and Tunisia, alongside the French National Navy, which celebrates its 400th anniversary.
More than 120 boats will animate the 2 km of equipped quays. Among the tall ships open for paid visits: the Belem (French three-masted ship), the Santa Maria Manuela (Portugal), the Galeón Andalucía (Spain, seen in Pirates of the Caribbean), the Morgenster (Netherlands), the Pascual Flores, the Shtandart, La Grâce, and the Nao Victoria (replica of Magellan's ship). In a French world premiere, the INS Sudarshini, a 54m three-masted barque from the Indian Navy, makes the journey from Goa.
Solidarity, culture, environment, maritime professions, gastronomy, local heritage — each village offers its activities, demonstrations, and stands. Nearly 50 sea shanty groups provide the musical atmosphere (sea shanties were recently inscribed on the French intangible heritage list).
Sète is served by the SNCF train station (15 min walk from the quays, 25 min from Montpellier by TER). By car, free parking lots at the city entrances (Mas Coulet, Cayenne Sud, Castellas) with shuttles to the center. Access to the festival is from the city center quays (Quai de la République, Quai d'Alger, Quai Aspirant Herber, Môle Saint-Louis).
Access to the quays, villages, concerts, parades, and all activities is free. Only visits to the tall ships require a ticket (12 € adult, 8 € child 4-15 years, family pass 24 €), available online at billetterie.archipel-thau.com or on site at the Sète Tourist Office.
Nearly 400,000 to 500,000 visitors are expected during the week — prioritize public transport and anticipate movements in the city center. Travelers with a liO train or bus ticket benefit from a reduced rate on visits to the tall ships.
