The festival of glass arts at the Château du Hohlandsbourg in Wintzenheim
Every spring, the Château du Hohlandsbourg in Wintzenheim celebrates its seasonal reopening with Festi'Verre, a festival dedicated to glass arts. In an atmosphere set to medieval music and dances, a dozen glass artisans share their know-how through demonstrations, exhibitions, and interactive workshops. Cane and torch blowing, stained glass, mosaic, glass painting, engraving, and fusing: young and old discover the secrets of glass transformation in this 13th-century fortress.
Festi'Verre annually marks the spring reopening of the Château du Hohlandsbourg, perched at 620 meters altitude on the heights of Wintzenheim, near Colmar. This unique festival celebrates glass arts in all their forms within the exceptional setting of a 13th-century fortress, a place historically linked to glasswork since medieval glassworks were traditionally located in forests, where artisans found the essential raw materials for their craft: sand, wood, water, and plants providing potash and limestone.
For two days, a dozen glass artisans from all over France take over the castle's courtyard and halls to share their passion with the public. Among the talents present are master glassblowers like Chloé Grevaz and François Dubois (Les Infondus), specializing in glass blowing at temperatures ranging from 500°C to 1150°C, and Élodie Gaillard from Séléné Verre. Each artisan reveals the secrets of their technique through spectacular demonstrations, exhibitions of unique pieces, and engaging exchanges with visitors.
Festi'Verre offers a true panorama of ancient and contemporary glassworking techniques. Visitors can discover cane glass blowing, a true ballet of ancient gestures where molten material takes shape under the artisan's breath. Torch work allows for the creation of delicate beads and figurines. The stained glass of François Lepoutre, the mosaics of Véronique Bean, the glass engraving of Lucie Loridan, glass painting, and fusing complete this fascinating overview.
Beyond demonstrations, Festi'Verre offers introductory workshops accessible to everyone. Adults and teenagers from 12 years old can try glass blowing in sessions led by the artisans (5 people per session, upon registration). Translucent paper stained glass workshops allow younger children to create their own artwork. These practical workshops turn the festival into a true open-air glass school.
The atmosphere of Festi'Verre is enhanced by medieval music and dances that set the rhythm for visitors' strolls. Dancers in costume from Elsass Tempora and Les Joyeulx Bransleurs perform Renaissance choreographies, while musicians from Hauvoy fill the castle courtyard with the melodies of yesteryear. This enchanting atmosphere transports visitors to a Middle Ages where glass was a precious material, a symbol of light and refinement.
In 2026, the spring reopening of the Château du Hohlandsbourg is celebrated by Festi'Terre on April 11th and 12th, a festival dedicated to the arts of earth, succeeding Festi'Verre. Pottery, construction, decorative elements, and artisan demonstrations around clay and earth will replace glass arts, in a festive atmosphere punctuated by medieval music and dances.
For the 2026 season, the Château du Hohlandsbourg renews its opening festival concept with Festi'Terre, on April 11th and 12th, 2026, from 10 AM to 6 PM. After the arts of glass (Festi'Verre) and wood (Festi'Bois), it is earth that takes center stage, an essential raw material and the guiding theme for the castle's 2026 season, under the slogan "Dare to Dream".
Potters and ceramicists will present the different stages of clay transformation: utilitarian pottery, tiles and construction elements, decorative tiles, terracotta musical instruments, and figurines. Demonstrations, exhibitions, and interactive workshops will allow visitors to discover traditional and contemporary earthworking techniques, in a medieval atmosphere enlivened by musicians and dancers.
