Films that you can eat with your eyes
Since 2001, the Festival Courtivore has been enlivening the Rouen film scene with a concept that is as simple as it is effective: inviting the public to discover short films from around the world and elect their favorite. In a quarter of a century, "films that you can eat with your eyes" — a slogan that has become the festival's signature — have won over a loyal and enthusiastic audience, making Courtivore a major cultural event in the Rouen metropolitan area.
The festival unfolds over a full month, from mid-May to mid-June, following a progressive and participatory format. Competition screenings are held on Friday evenings at the Cinéma Ariel in Mont-Saint-Aignan, a municipal cinema committed to promoting independent film. Each screening presents a selection of short films that the audience rates and ranks. The highest-rated films advance to the grand finale, held at the Cinéma Omnia in the center of Rouen, where the public's final vote determines the winner of the edition.
Each year, the festival's selection committee receives hundreds of film submissions from around the world. The selected program offers a panorama of contemporary short film creation: fiction, animation, documentary, experimental, comedy, drama, thriller. All genres and sensibilities are represented, with particular attention paid to the originality of the subject matter and the quality of the filmmaking.
Courtivore asserts itself as a true springboard for young directors. Many filmmakers who presented their first films at the festival have gone on to have successful careers. The festival also organizes special screenings throughout the year — Ciné-Piscine (pool screening), Flux Tendu (themed screenings) — which extend the festival spirit beyond the May-June competition.
Courtivore is fully integrated into the cultural life of the Métropole Rouen Normandie. The festival benefits from the support of the City of Mont-Saint-Aignan, the City of Rouen, and local cultural partners. With nearly 3,000 spectators per edition, Courtivore demonstrates the vitality of Norman cinephilia and the public's appetite for short and inventive film formats.
The 25th edition of the Courtivore Festival will take place from May 13 to June 13, 2026, in Rouen and Mont-Saint-Aignan. A full month of short films with 18 films in competition (selected from nearly 1,600 received), representing 11 production countries. For this anniversary, the program focuses on documentaries and notably explores new technologies and artificial intelligence, alongside thematic sessions organized in about ten cultural venues in Rouen.
The Courtivore Festival celebrates its 25th anniversary with an anniversary edition spanning a full month, from May 13 to June 13, 2026, between Rouen and Mont-Saint-Aignan. A quarter-century after its creation, the Rouen short film festival still offers its original formula: the public alone is the judge and elects their favorite films throughout the screenings, leading up to the grand finale.
The 2026 selection brings together 18 short films chosen from nearly 1,600 films received this year, from 11 countries. The program gives a special place to documentaries while maintaining the usual diversity of genres (fiction, animation, experimental). Several films explore new technologies and artificial intelligence, a strong thematic focus of this 25th edition.
The competition is organized into three acts (6 short films per session) spread over three Friday evenings between Cinéma Ariel in Mont-Saint-Aignan and Cinéma Omnia in Rouen, then concludes with the grand final at Cinéma Omnia on Saturday, June 13. The films best rated by the public during the three acts advance to this final, where a final vote designates the edition's winner.
In parallel with the competition, the 2026 edition offers about ten thematic sessions and special events: Les Courts de Rattrapage (Best of 2025), youth sessions En Short and À l'Ère des Robots, Filmons Sous la Pluie evenings at the Musée des Beaux-Arts, Sueurs Froides, Horticourt at the Centre Photographique, Dans les Coulisses d'un Film at the Saint-Sever library, or a Grande Soirée Archimède-Films at the Omnia. These events take place in various cultural venues: Quartier Libre, Atrium, municipal libraries, and Musée des Beaux-Arts.
