Rouen celebrates Norman gastronomy in its historic center
The Fête du Ventre et de la Gastronomie Normande is much more than a producers' market: it is a celebration of Norman culinary identity in the heart of one of France's most beautiful cities. Every second weekend in October, the historic center of Rouen transforms into a vast open-air feast, where the aromas of teurgoule, tripes à la mode de Caen, boudin de Mortagne, and apple tart mingle in the cobbled streets.
In 2021, Rouen became the only French city to join the UNESCO Creative Cities of Gastronomy network, alongside prestigious cities like Tucson, Ensenada, and Östersund. This international recognition celebrates an exceptional gastronomic heritage, nourished by the diversity of Norman terroirs: maritime coast, hedgerow country, cereal plains, and the Pays d'Auge.
The Fête du Ventre takes over the squares and streets of Rouen's historic center, at the foot of Notre-Dame Cathedral immortalized by Monet, near the Gros-Horloge and the Place du Vieux-Marché. More than 160 producers and artisans set up their stalls, offering tastings, direct sales, and demonstrations of their skills.
Visitors can discover and savor:
The Fête du Ventre welcomes the gastronomic brotherhoods of Normandy, guardians of regional culinary traditions, who parade in ceremonial dress and lead initiation ceremonies. Confrérie du Camembert, Confrérie des Chevaliers du Trou Normand, Confrérie du Cidre: these picturesque figures add a festive and solemn dimension to the event.
The atmosphere of the Fête du Ventre is one of sharing and conviviality. Families, food lovers, the curious, and connoisseurs gather in a warm atmosphere to celebrate the Norman culture of good eating. Cooking workshops, chef demonstrations, and musical entertainment punctuate the two days of festivities.
The Fête du Ventre et de la Gastronomie Normande returns for its 27th edition on October 10 and 11, 2026, in the historic center of Rouen. More than 160 Norman producers and artisans are expected for this celebration of the region's terroir and gastronomic know-how.
