The historical cinema festival in Verdun
The Vision d'Histoire Film Festival is a cinematic event organized every autumn in Verdun by the Department of Meuse in partnership with the Cinéma Caroussel. Since 2016, this festival has been showcasing historical films, documentaries, and fiction that explore the major events of the past century. Each edition is built around a unifying theme and hosts directors for previews, masterclasses, and public discussions.
The Vision d'Histoire Film Festival was created in 2016 in the city of Verdun, a place of memory par excellence, to explore the link between cinema and history. Organized by the Department of Meuse in collaboration with the Cinéma Caroussel, this annual festival offers a demanding yet accessible program that examines major historical events through the seventh art.
Each edition of the festival is built around a unifying theme that guides the film selection. For example, the 7th edition (2022) had the theme 'The Exercise of Power,' inviting viewers to reflect on the mechanisms of political power throughout cinema history.
The festival presents a selection of about twenty films in competition, mixing historical fiction, documentaries, short films, and heritage works. The films are screened over five days at the Cinéma Caroussel, offering the public a complete immersion in historical cinema.
Vision d'Histoire welcomes cinema personalities for previews, masterclasses, and public encounters. The 7th edition notably hosted director Costa-Gavras as guest of honor, demonstrating the festival's ambition and reach.
The festival also offers a program dedicated to young audiences, with school screenings and films adapted for younger viewers, contributing to visual and historical education through cinema.
The Cinéma Caroussel, located at 4 rue du 61e Régiment d'Artillerie in Verdun, is the main venue for the festival. This cinema in Verdun, committed to art-house programming, offers optimal projection conditions for the selected works.
The festival's anchoring in Verdun is not accidental. The city, marked by the battle of 1916, is a universal symbol of the memory of conflicts. By hosting a festival dedicated to historical cinema, Verdun extends its memorial mission while opening up to broader reflections on contemporary history.
