The Nature Festival in Hauts-de-Seine: biodiversity at the gates of Paris

The Nature Festival is a national event created in 2007 to raise public awareness of biodiversity and to discover the natural riches of our territories. Organized every year in May around the spring equinox, it brings together thousands of stakeholders - local authorities, associations, schools, companies - who offer free and accessible activities for everyone.

In Hauts-de-Seine, the Departmental Council has been a long-term partner of this national event. Thanks to the management of several large natural spaces - the Parc Départemental des Chanteraines in Villeneuve-la-Garenne and Gennevilliers, the Domaine Départemental de la Vallée-aux-Loups in Châtenay-Malabry, the banks of the Seine and the green corridors - the department offers a rich program of outings and activities every year in the heart of nature, just a few kilometers from Paris.

Activities for everyone

The Nature Festival program in Hauts-de-Seine covers a very wide range of activities, adapted to different audiences. For young children and families, soil discovery workshops allow them to understand the role of earthworms, fungi and microorganisms in ecosystems. Guided botanical walks reveal the diversity of wild plants that thrive in parks and urban wastelands.

The Parc Départemental des Chanteraines hosts one of the most popular activities each year: the sheep transhumance, a walk accompanied by a flock of sheep grazing in the park's meadows. This moment of rural life in the heart of the Parisian suburbs attracts hundreds of visitors, especially families with young children amazed by the proximity of the animals.

In the evening, night outings are organized to observe frogs, toads and newts in the wetlands of the parks. These twilight walks with flashlights have become very popular, with mandatory reservations due to limited places.

A nature forum to go further

Each edition generally concludes with a Festival-Forum bringing together associations and institutions involved in nature protection in Hauts-de-Seine. Discovery stands, exhibitions, meetings with naturalists, public conferences and practical workshops make up this festive and educational afternoon. It is an opportunity to meet local biodiversity stakeholders, to learn about protected species in the area and to discover how to actively participate in the preservation of urban nature.

The Nature Festival is part of the ambitious environmental policy of the Hauts-de-Seine department, which manages over 250 hectares of green spaces open to the public and has implemented ecological management plans to promote biodiversity in its parks. It is an opportunity to show that nature is very much present in this densely urbanized department, and that it deserves to be known, loved and protected.
