Open-air itinerant festival in Gennevilliers — theatre, dance, circus, and concerts
The Festival des Essentiels is an open-air itinerant festival that takes over the neighborhoods of Gennevilliers, Paris, and Montreuil each summer with theatre, dance, circus, and concert performances, offered for free or at an accessible price. Founded on the values of sharing, equity, artistic mediation, and environmental respect, it brings quality culture to places where it doesn't always reach.
The Festival des Essentiels is a unique open-air itinerant festival that leaves the theaters each summer to meet residents in their neighborhoods. For several years, it has taken over the gardens, squares, and public spaces of Gennevilliers, Paris (18th and 20th arrondissements), and Montreuil, bringing quality performances to audiences who don't always cross the threshold of theaters and concert halls.
Born from a strong conviction—that live art is essential to human beings and must be accessible to all—the festival is distinguished by its four founding pillars:
The Festival des Essentiels program is resolutely multidisciplinary: theatre, dance, circus arts, concerts, and performances follow one another over several days and in several neighborhoods. The shows offered—carefully selected for their artistic quality and accessibility—are performed by established companies and artists who agree to step outside their usual circuits to reach new audiences.
Groups like Les Dames de la Joliette have featured in past programs, alongside contemporary circus companies, street theater troupes, and musicians from alternative scenes. Each edition features about ten shows, creating a dense and varied program.
The Place du Marché in Gennevilliers and other public spaces in the city have regularly hosted Essentiels festival performances. This presence in the working-class and multicultural city of Gennevilliers is emblematic of the festival's approach: to go where culture is lacking, where people don't always feel legitimate entering a theater, to surprise them, move them, and open new artistic horizons.
The itinerant format of the festival is both a logistical constraint and an invaluable human richness. Moving from neighborhood to neighborhood, from town to town, helps build a diverse audience community and create solidarity between territories. The residents of Gennevilliers and those of Montreuil or the 20th arrondissement thus share the same festival, the same artists, the same aesthetic experience—a rare and precious act of cultural fraternity.
