Renaissance Heritage Festival at the Château de Diane de Poitiers
The Festival de la Renaissance d'Anet celebrates the heritage of the Château d'Anet, an architectural gem built in 1548 by Philibert de l'Orme for Diane de Poitiers. This event features historical shows, reenactments of 16th-century court life, costumed tours, and demonstrations of period arts and crafts. Organized in conjunction with the Centre d'Interprétation de la Renaissance (CIR), the festival offers a fascinating dive into the world of the French Renaissance.
Each year, the town of Anet, in Eure-et-Loir, celebrates its exceptional Renaissance heritage through a festival dedicated to the golden age of the Château d'Anet. This architectural masterpiece, commissioned by King Henri II for his favorite Diane de Poitiers, was built from 1548 onwards by the renowned architect Philibert de l'Orme, with the participation of famous artists such as Benvenuto Cellini, Germain Pilon, and Jean Cousin.
The festival features living historical reenactments evoking the lavish life of the Valois court. Troupes of actors in period costumes bring to life the glorious days of the château, staging the sumptuous festivities that Diane de Poitiers organized to receive the king and his court. Renaissance dance performances, sword fighting demonstrations, and early music concerts punctuate the festivities.
An artisans' village recreates Renaissance craftsmanship: illumination, calligraphy, leatherwork, goldsmithing, and stone carving. Visitors can watch demonstrations and learn these ancestral skills through participatory workshops. These activities highlight the artistic refinement that characterized the era of the château's construction.
The festival is supported by the Centre d'Interprétation de la Renaissance (CIR), a scenographic space located opposite the château. This center offers an immersive experience with a 360° room, interactive models, educational videos, and tactile games organized around four themes: Henri II, Diane de Poitiers, Philibert de l'Orme, and the château itself. The festival allows visitors to discover or rediscover this architectural heritage, classified as a historical monument.
The Festival de la Renaissance d'Anet contributes to the cultural and tourist influence of the Pays de Dreux and the Eure-et-Loir region. By combining live performance, built heritage, and cultural mediation, it offers a complete and accessible experience for all audiences, from history enthusiasts to families seeking discovery. The beauty of the site, with the monumental portal of the château and the funerary chapel of Diane de Poitiers, provides an ideal setting for this celebration of the French Renaissance.
