Historical reenactment at the Domaine Royal de Dreux, a journey through the ages
The Au Fil des Siècles festival offers a historical immersion every summer at the Domaine Royal de Dreux. Over three hectares in the park of the Royal Chapel, reenactment groups set up camps, combat arenas, and period craft workshops. Knights in armor, equestrian tournaments, archery, coin minting, and medieval music transport visitors through the centuries. Created in 2023, this festival highlights the historical heritage of the Royal Domain.
The Domaine Royal de Dreux is an exceptional heritage site with a history stretching back over a thousand years. Located on a promontory overlooking the town, it houses the remains of the Château de Dannemarche, the famous Royal Chapel Saint-Louis — the necropolis of the House of Orléans — and a landscaped park offering panoramic views of the Blaise valley. It is in this historic setting that the Au Fil des Siècles festival comes to life each summer, transforming the park into a true period village.
The festival unfolds over three hectares of the Domaine Royal park, featuring an impressive historical reenactment setup. Medieval camps are established with their tents, stalls, and artisans. A combat arena hosts demonstrations of warrior techniques: medieval fencing, sword and shield combat, and knightly jousts. Visitors can try their hand at archery, coin minting, and weapon handling under the guidance of reenactors who are passionate and rigorous in their historical approach.
Knightly tournaments are one of the festival's highlights. In the arena, fully armored riders compete in thrilling jousts, to the cheers of the crowd. These equestrian shows, prepared by specialized reenactment groups such as Excalibur Yvelines, Le Griffon Rouge, the Compagnie Médiévale de Saint-Ouen, and Les Derniers Trouvères, offer a strikingly realistic spectacle. Musicians and dancers in period costumes complete the festive and authentic atmosphere.
Beyond the combats and tournaments, the festival showcases the craftsmanship of past centuries. Costumed artisans recreate the gestures of ancient trades: blacksmithing, pottery, weaving, leatherworking, illumination, and calligraphy. The Écomusée des Vignerons et Artisans Drouais participates in the event by presenting local artisanal traditions. Hands-on workshops allow children and adults to try their hand at these ancestral techniques, making the festival an educational and fun experience for the whole family.
Created in 2023, Au Fil des Siècles quickly found its audience. The second edition in 2024, themed « 1224, In the Time of the Builders » to celebrate the 800th anniversary of the construction of the Château de Dannemarche, confirmed the event's success. Reenactment groups from all over Île-de-France and Centre-Val de Loire — Viva Historia, Tria Acumina, and many others — participated in this historical celebration. Each edition explores a different era, offering visitors a renewed journey through the history of the Domaine Royal and the town of Dreux.
Fourth edition of the Au Fil des Siècles festival at the Domaine Royal de Dreux. A new historical era to discover with reenactments, tournaments, workshops, and shows in the park of the Royal Chapel.
The fourth edition of Au Fil des Siècles is scheduled for July 18 and 19, 2026, at the Domaine Royal de Dreux. The festival will continue its exploration of the great historical eras of the Domaine Royal, with a new period to discover.
Period camps, tournaments, combat demonstrations, hands-on workshops, ancient crafts, and musical performances will animate the park of the Royal Chapel throughout the weekend. The program and theme will be announced in the spring of 2026.
