Chartres en Lumières: When Light Enhances Heritage

Since 2003, Chartres en Lumières has established itself as the world's largest event dedicated to showcasing heritage through light. Each season, from April to January, the city of Chartres adorns itself with spectacular light shows that transform its historic monuments, medieval facades, churches, and bridges into true ephemeral works of art.

An Exceptional Light Trail

The trail includes over twenty illuminated sites, among them the majestic Chartres Cathedral Notre-Dame, a UNESCO World Heritage site, the Saint-Pierre church, the Chartres theatre, historic bridges, and numerous facades in the old town. Each site features an original show, designed by internationally renowned artists and lighting designers, who regularly renew their creations to surprise regular visitors.

The illuminations are on seven nights a week, from dusk until 1 AM (11:30 PM from mid-October onwards), offering visitors complete freedom to discover the trail at their own pace, completely free of charge.

A World-Class Event

Chartres en Lumières has gained global renown, making the city of Chartres an undisputed benchmark for heritage lighting. The event attracts hundreds of thousands of visitors from France and abroad each year, drawn by the artistic quality of the creations and the beauty of Chartres' heritage enhanced by light.

Night guided tours are offered to reveal the secrets of the shows and the history of the illuminated monuments. A marked walking route connects all the sites in a walk of about two hours, but visitors can also choose to wander freely according to their desires.

Innovation and Artistic Creation

Each new season brings its share of novelties: new shows, new sites, innovative technologies. The creations combine video mapping, monumental projections, interactive installations, and light games, offering a unique immersive and poetic experience. Artists explore the links between light, architecture, and history, offering new interpretations of Chartres' heritage.

The event is produced by the City of Chartres, with the support of institutional and private partners, and mobilizes dozens of technicians, artists, and volunteers each season to offer an exceptional spectacle.
