Traveling organ music festival in the churches of the Eure department
The Festival d'Orgues de l'Eure is a traveling musical event that showcases the exceptional organ heritage of the department. From the cathedral of Évreux to the churches of Les Andelys, from Conches-en-Ouche to Cormeilles, including Tillières-sur-Avre, organ recitals unfold in remarkable buildings, revealing the richness of the instruments and the exceptional acoustics of these places of worship. Supported by local organ enthusiast associations and passionate organists, this festival combines sacred music, religious heritage, and the discovery of a fascinating instrument.
The department of Eure possesses an unsuspected wealth of organ heritage. Dozens of organs, some dating back to the 17th century, others inaugurated in the 21st century, resonate in the churches and cathedrals of the department. The Festival d'Orgues de l'Eure highlights these exceptional instruments through traveling recitals that crisscross the territory throughout the year.
The Notre-Dame d'Évreux Cathedral hosts recitals on its grand organ inaugurated in 2005, with programs ranging from the baroque music of Bach and De Grigny to the romantic works of Vierne and Litaize. The titular organist Odile Jutten and organist Pierluigi Tomasi offer dialogues between the choir organ and the grand organ, presenting a repertoire ranging from the Middle Ages to the 18th century.
The Sainte-Croix church in Cormeilles, renowned for its exceptional acoustics and its grand organ, hosts concerts combining organ and piano with works by Bach, Handel, Albinoni, and Debussy. In Tillières-sur-Avre, the Association des Amis de l'Orgue (AZOTE) organizes presentations and demonstrations of the organ in the Chennebrun church. In Les Andelys, the association Les Amis des Orgues des Andelys schedules regular recitals that attract a loyal audience.
The Festival d'Orgues de l'Eure contributes to the valorization of the department's religious heritage. Each concert is an opportunity to discover a remarkable building — Romanesque, Gothic, or classical churches — and to understand the history of the organ that resonates there. Commented presentations of the instruments, visits to the organ lofts, and meetings with organists enrich the musical and heritage experience.
