The great board game event on the Vendée coast
Every spring, La Tranche-sur-Mer hosts its Festival du Jeu at the Pôle Culturel Les Floralies. Organized by the toy library L'Îlot Jeux, this free family event brings together board game, tabletop game, and wooden game enthusiasts. LEGO workshops, escape games, meetings with game designers, giant outdoor games: two days of fun festivities accessible to all ages, in a seaside town in southern Vendée.
La Tranche-sur-Mer, a popular seaside resort in southern Vendée known for its 13 kilometers of fine sandy beaches, its classified municipal campsite, and its famous kite festival, hosts an unmissable gaming event every spring: the Festival du Jeu. Organized by the associative toy library L'Îlot Jeux, this 100% family-friendly and free event delights the inhabitants of the Vendée coast and game lovers from all over the region every year.
The Festival du Jeu offers a rich and varied program, designed for all audiences, from the youngest to adults. At the Pôle Culturel Les Floralies, the rooms and outdoor spaces are transformed into a vast collective playground. Visitors can discover hundreds of recent and classic board games, guided by passionate facilitators who explain the rules and accompany the games.
Among the event's highlights, the LEGO workshops are particularly popular with children and creative adults, featuring timed or free-play construction challenges. Life-sized escape games immerse participants in collective adventures where intelligence and cooperation are key. Giant wooden games—giant mikado, life-sized chess, XXL board games—fill the open spaces for games under the Atlantic sky.
Each edition, the festival welcomes game designers and illustrators who come to present their creations and interact with the public. These meetings offer insight into the board game creation process, from the initial idea to the prototype, including testing and balancing phases. Specialized publishers, such as IELLO—a long-time partner of the festival—showcase their latest releases, allowing visitors to discover titles not yet available in stores.
The toy library L'Îlot Jeux, the beating heart of the festival, plays a vital role in the cultural life of La Tranche-sur-Mer. Offering rentals and loans of hundreds of games, it enriches the local area year-round through regular game nights, school workshops, and activities in retirement homes. The Festival du Jeu is the culmination of this community outreach: a moment of collective sharing that goes beyond mere gaming to become a true tool for social connection.
The event is supported by the La Tranche-sur-Mer town hall, the Pôle Culturel Les Floralies, and numerous local and national partners. Its completely free access is a deliberate choice by the organizers, who want games to be accessible to all families, regardless of income.
La Tranche-sur-Mer boasts an exceptional natural setting. Nestled between the Atlantic Ocean and the Cailleau marshes, the town offers some of the most beautiful white sandy beaches in Vendée, awarded the Blue Flag. The Forêt domaniale des Pays de Monts, hiking trails, and cycling paths complement the outdoor activities suitable for families. The Festival du Jeu fits perfectly into this tourist ecosystem, offering an ideal indoor cultural activity for unpredictable spring Atlantic weather.
The town also hosts the renowned International Kite Festival each year, whose fame extends far beyond regional borders. This dual festive focus—games and kites—reinforces La Tranche-sur-Mer's image as a prime destination for families seeking discovery and entertainment throughout the year.
The 6th edition of the Festival du Jeu, held on April 19 and 20, 2025, set a new attendance record with over 2,000 players welcomed at the Pôle Culturel Les Floralies. This success demonstrates the event's lasting presence in the Vendée cultural landscape and the growing public appetite for in-person gaming, in an era where screens play an ever-larger role. The festival thus continues to carry a strong message: board games, a vector for encounters, laughter, and shared emotions, have never been more alive.
The 7th edition of the Festival du Jeu de La Tranche-sur-Mer will take place on April 25 and 26, 2026, at the Pôle Culturel Les Floralies. Still organized by the toy library L'Îlot Jeux, this free family event offers two days of fun discoveries for all ages.
