About Nuits de Joux

Created in 1974, the Festival des Nuits de Joux is the theatrical and musical event of the summer in the Haut-Doubs. Every year in July-August, the majestic Château de Joux, a medieval fortress overlooking the Cluse pass in La Cluse-et-Mijoux, transforms into an open-air stage hosting classic and contemporary plays, concerts, and shows for young audiences. Organized by the Centre d'Animation du Haut-Doubs (CAHD), this historic festival celebrates its 50th anniversary and remains an essential cultural reference in the region.

Les Nuits de Joux: 50 years of theater and music in an exceptional setting

Since 1974, the Festival des Nuits de Joux has been making the walls of the Château de Joux vibrate, a thousand-year-old fortress perched at an altitude of 1,000 meters in the Cluse pass, in La Cluse-et-Mijoux. This summer festival, one of the oldest in Franche-Comté, offers a program each summer combining classic and contemporary theater, concerts, readings, and shows for young audiences in an exceptional natural and heritage setting.

A unique historic setting

The Château de Joux, a listed historic monument, offers a spectacular setting for the performances. The inner courtyards, ramparts, and outdoor spaces of the fortress become stages where dramas, comedies, and recitals are performed. The natural acoustics of the site and the magic of the falling night create an incomparable atmosphere, conducive to emotion and contemplation. The festival also uses venues in Pontarlier for some shows, extending its reach beyond the fortress.

An eclectic and demanding program

The Nuits de Joux program is divided between classic repertoire (Molière, Shakespeare, Chekhov, Jules Verne) and contemporary creations, not forgetting young audiences. Readings, "cartes blanches" (open invitations), and concerts enrich the program on weekends. The invited directors and actors bring fresh perspectives to the great works of the dramatic heritage while offering original and accessible formats.

A festival rooted in the territory

Organized by the Centre d'Animation du Haut-Doubs (CAHD), the Festival des Nuits de Joux is deeply rooted in the cultural life of the Haut-Doubs. It contributes to the tourist and cultural influence of La Cluse-et-Mijoux, Pontarlier, and the entire region, attracting thousands of spectators each summer from Franche-Comté, neighboring Switzerland, and beyond. The festival is also a moment of conviviality, with opportunities for encounters between artists and the public after the performances.

50 years of creation and sharing

In 2025, the Festival des Nuits de Joux celebrated its 50th anniversary with a special edition full of surprises, shows, and concerts. This half-century of existence testifies to the cultural vitality of the Haut-Doubs and the audience's attachment to this unique summer event.
