The Medieval Festival of Amboise: A Journey Through Time at the Foot of the Royal Castle

Every year at the end of May, the city of Amboise hosts its Medieval Festival, a festive weekend that immerses visitors and residents in the atmosphere of the Middle Ages. At the foot of the Royal Castle of Amboise, a favorite residence of the Kings of France during the Renaissance, a medieval encampment comes to life with faithful reconstructions of daily life in the 15th century.

A Living Historical Encampment

Historical reenactment associations set up a period encampment with tents, weapons, armor, and everyday objects. Members of the companies, dressed in authentic costumes, present the daily life of knights, artisans, and peasants of the Middle Ages. Armored combat demonstrations, medieval fencing, and archery punctuate the day, while artisans offer workshops in blacksmithing, calligraphy, stone carving, and leatherworking.

Entertainment and Shows for the Whole Family

The Medieval Festival is designed as a family-friendly and participatory event. Children can try their hand at archery, discover knights' weapons and armor, participate in medieval games, and get their faces painted as period characters. Jugglers, troubadours, and storytellers wander through the streets and liven up the squares. An artisan market offers medieval objects and jewelry, period culinary specialties, and local products.

An Exceptional Heritage Setting

Amboise offers a setting naturally suited for this medieval immersion. The Royal Castle, where Charles VIII, Louis XII, and Francis I succeeded each other, overlooks the Loire River from its promontory. The event is organized in partnership with local schools, particularly the SEGPA and ULIS sections, which present woodworking and medieval-inspired craft creations.
