Troubadours, knights, and artisans invade the alleys of the Most Beautiful Medieval Village of Quercy
Every late August, the perched village of Lauzerte reconnects with its medieval past during a popular and free festival that takes over the Place des Cornières and the alleys of this 12th-century bastide, classified among the Most Beautiful Villages of France. Troubadours, knights in armor, medieval combat, falconry, costumed artisans, a convivial medieval meal, and a nocturnal fire show immerse visitors and locals in the atmosphere of the Occitan Middle Ages.
Founded in the 12th century by the Count of Toulouse, the bastide of Lauzerte is one of the most beautiful medieval bastides in Quercy. Perched on a rocky outcrop at an altitude of 224 meters, it overlooks the gently rolling landscapes of Quercy Blanc, a land of white stones and sunny hillsides. Classified among the Most Beautiful Villages of France and a key stop on the Way of Saint James of Compostela (GR 65), Lauzerte retains its medieval layout, arcades, Place des Cornières, and half-timbered houses from the 15th and 16th centuries intact.
It is in this exceptional setting, where the stone still speaks the language of past centuries, that the Medieval Festival of Lauzerte takes on its full meaning. Every late August, the village comes alive to the rhythm of the Middle Ages, transforming its alleys and squares into a living stage of a bygone but vibrant era.
The heart of the festival is the grand medieval market that takes over the Place des Cornières and the surrounding alleys. Dozens of costumed artisans showcase their creations and traditional skills: potters, blacksmiths, weavers, illuminators, luthiers, glassblowers, embroiderers, and saddlers. The stalls are filled with artisanal products made using ancestral techniques, offering visitors an authentic glimpse into the material and artisanal life of the Middle Ages.
Costumed troubadours and minstrels wander among the arcades, delighting the alleys with their medieval melodies played on the hurdy-gurdy, lute, flute, and bagpipes. The atmosphere is that of a lively medieval fair, where the inhabitants themselves embrace the spirit of costume and historical immersion.
The knight fights are one of the most anticipated highlights of the festival. Historical reenactment troupes take over the village's main square for jousts and combat demonstrations in armor, with knights bearing the livery of the lords who once dominated Quercy. Children and adults alike are fascinated by the clash of swords, the clinking of armor, and the war cries of the costumed combatants.
Falconry offers another striking spectacle: certified falconers present their birds of prey—peregrine falcons, goshawks, sparrowhawks—in free-flight demonstrations above the village, recalling that this noble art was inseparable from medieval seigneurial life. Presentation and awareness sessions on falconry are offered to the public, especially children.
One of the most convivial traditions of the festival is the medieval meal, served in the spirit of great medieval feasts. Under the arcades of the Place des Cornières or in a dedicated area, participants gather for a meal inspired by medieval recipes: ancient vegetable soups, spiced stews, brown breads, regional cheeses, and sweet-and-savory delicacies typical of Occitan medieval gastronomy. Musicians and costumed characters entertain during the meal, creating an authentic and good-natured medieval feast atmosphere.
As night falls on the bastide, the festival shifts to a more magical and spectacular register with the grand fire show. Fire-eaters, torch jugglers, and pyrotechnic artists illuminate the alleys of Lauzerte in a fiery ballet that keeps spectators on the edge of their seats. The light of the flames on the medieval stone facades creates striking plays of shadow and light, reminiscent of medieval festival nights.
One of the great qualities of the Medieval Festival of Lauzerte is its entirely free and open nature. No ticketing, no reserved areas: the festival belongs to the village and its visitors. Families, children, the elderly, and passing tourists mingle in a friendly and festive atmosphere that reflects Lauzerte's welcoming spirit. Activities throughout the two days include archery initiation, medieval calligraphy workshops, face painting as medieval characters, and medieval costume rentals for all ages.
