The Legend of the Throne: A Medieval Immersion in Roquebrune

Every summer, the medieval castle of Roquebrune-Cap-Martin, one of the oldest in France with origins dating back to the 10th century, hosts "The Legend of the Throne". This immersive medieval day, organized by the Roquebrune-Cap-Martin Tourist Animation Office in collaboration with historical reenactment associations, transforms the fortress and its surroundings into a living stage of the Middle Ages.

Discover Medieval Life at the Castle

Visitors step into the fascinating world of medieval garrisons and inhabitants. Reenactors in period costumes bring the various areas of the castle to life: the armories, the kitchens, the craft workshops, and the soldiers' quarters. The meticulously recreated historical equipment allows for an understanding of daily life in the Middle Ages, from combat techniques to artisanal know-how. Military maneuvers and scenes of life are presented throughout the day.

Shows and Activities for the Whole Family

The Legend of the Throne's program is designed for the whole family. Children can participate in various discovery workshops: introductory foam sword fighting, medieval calligraphy, shield making, and period skill games. Adults can attend knight combat demonstrations in armor, ancient dance performances, and knighting ceremonies. The highly anticipated medieval fashion show showcases historically accurate costumes.

Street Entertainment and Artistic Performances

Beyond the castle, the alleys of the old village of Roquebrune come alive with street performances. Jugglers, musicians playing medieval instruments (hurdy-gurdy, bagpipes, tambourine), and storytellers take over the squares and vaulted passages of the perched village. These artistic performances create an immersive medieval atmosphere in one of the most beautiful perched villages on the Côte d'Azur.

An Exceptional Historical Setting

The castle of Roquebrune, built in the 10th century by Count Vintimille to protect against Saracen invasions, is one of the oldest castles in France. Classified as a historical monument, it overlooks the Mediterranean at 300 meters altitude, offering spectacular views of the Bay of Monaco, Cap Martin, and the Italian coast. This authentic historical setting gives the medieval festival a special dimension, far from artificial reenactments.

Practical Information and Catering

Entry to the site is ticketed: €5 for adults, €3 for children, and free for those under 6. Street entertainment in the village is free to access. Medieval catering on-site offers period dishes and local specialties. The event is usually held on the first Sunday of August.

The Legend of the Throne — edition 2026

The Legend of the Throne returns to the castle of Roquebrune-Cap-Martin in August 2026 for a third edition of the medieval festival. Program and dates to be confirmed.
