Every first Saturday of December, Saint-Dié-des-Vosges celebrates Saint Nicholas with a grand, magical parade through the illuminated streets of the city. Nearly a thousand participants, about thirty decorated floats, and brass bands accompany the patron saint of Lorraine to the cathedral square, where the mayor symbolically hands over the keys of the city to the Bishop of Myra. Saint Nicholas, an emblematic festival of Lorraine

In Lorraine, Saint Nicholas is much more than just a festival: it is a true popular rite, deeply rooted in the region's cultural identity since Saint Nicholas became its patron in 1477. In Saint-Dié-des-Vosges, a city nestled in the heart of the Vosges valleys, this age-old tradition takes on a particularly warm and spectacular dimension each year, bringing together thousands of spectators in the illuminated streets of the city center.

The grand parade: a thousand participants in the illuminated streets

The highlight of the festivities, the grand Saint Nicholas parade, takes place on the first Saturday of December in the late afternoon. The procession starts from the Pierre-Mauroy roundabout, on rue d'Alsace, and crosses the city center to the cathedral square. Nearly a thousand participants from about thirty local associations make up a grandiose spectacle: decorated and illuminated floats, lively brass bands, costumed groups, majorettes, and dancers set the rhythm for this magical procession. The procession is led by Saint Nicholas himself, dressed in his miter and crozier, acclaimed by the crowd, followed by the formidable Père Fouettard (Father Whipper) and his donkey, faithful to the purest Lorraine tradition. On the cathedral square, the mayor of the city symbolically hands over the keys of the city to the Bishop of Myra, perpetuating a ceremony imbued with solemnity and conviviality.

The Christmas craft market

Located on the Place du Général-de-Gaulle, at the foot of the cathedral, the Saint-Dié-des-Vosges Christmas craft market welcomes visitors throughout December. The wooden chalets offer artisanal creations, local products from the Vosges region, and seasonal delicacies: gingerbread, pretzels, crispy waffles, and mulled wine flavored with spices. The Village of Lights, built by volunteers from the Festival Committee, stands alongside the market and offers an enchanting setting with its replicas of emblematic monuments and its magical illuminations.

Activities and workshops for the whole family

Throughout December, the city offers a program of activities designed for all generations. Street performances, concerts, creative workshops for children, and meetings with Santa Claus and his traditional mailbox punctuate the weekends. The 116 light points in the city center, the large Christmas tree on the Place du Général-de-Gaulle, and the Tour de la Liberté, adorned with rainbow colors, transform Saint-Dié into a jewel of light that the locals are proud of.

A living heritage in the heart of the Vosges

The Saint-Nicolas Festivities of Saint-Dié-des-Vosges embody the vitality of Lorraine traditions and the deep attachment of the inhabitants to their cultural heritage. Driven by the dynamism of the Festival Committee and dozens of volunteer associations, this popular celebration is a must-see event of the Vosges winter, combining authenticity, conviviality, and wonder in a unique mountain setting.
