Religious and patriotic festival of Ajaccio, every August 15th
The Ajaccio Assumption Festival is the great Ajaccian summer celebration of August 15th, which annually brings together the religious festivities of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary and the commemorations of the birth of Napoleon Bonaparte, born in Ajaccio on August 15th, 1769. Set in the heart of the Corsican summer season, this day combines a solemn mass at the Cathedral, a religious procession, official ceremonies in Place Foch, and the grand fireworks display launched from Ajaccio Bay.
August 15th in Ajaccio is undoubtedly the most emblematic date in the city's calendar. It combines two inseparable dimensions of Ajaccian identity: the religious festival of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, observed throughout the Catholic Church, and the commemoration of the birth of Napoleon Bonaparte, the city's most famous child, born at 4 rue Saint-Charles on August 15th, 1769.
This double tradition makes August 15th in Ajaccio a culminating moment of the summer season, attracting thousands of Corsicans, mainlanders, and foreign tourists to the city center streets each year.
The religious program generally includes a solemn mass celebrated at the Notre-Dame-de-l'Assomption Cathedral of Ajaccio by the Bishop of Corsica, wreath-laying ceremonies in front of the statues of the King of Rome and the First Consul in Place Foch, and in the evening, a religious procession that winds through the city center streets from the Cathedral to Casone, the district where the colossal statue of Napoleon as emperor stands.
Ajaccio Cathedral, where Napoleon was baptized in 1771, is the beating heart of this day.
The religious celebration is part of a broader cycle, the Napoleonic Days, which take place from August 13th to 15th in Ajaccio's historic center. Military reenactments in period costumes, parades, Imperial Guard reliefs, bivouacs, skirmishes in front of the Citadel, conferences, exhibitions, imperial dances, and music animate the city for three days.
Everything is organized by the Ajaccio Tourist Office in partnership with the City of Ajaccio and numerous reenactment troupes from all over France and abroad.
The highlight of the day, the August 15th fireworks, are launched from a barge at sea, in Ajaccio Bay, around 10 PM. Visible from the entire Ajaccian coast, it is traditionally followed by a public concert, often in Place Miot or Place Campinchi, which extends the celebration late into the night.
Much more than a simple liturgical festival, the Ajaccio Assumption is an opportunity for the city to reaffirm its roots: centuries-old Catholic faith, attachment to the Napoleonic figure, Mediterranean hospitality. For visitors, it's an opportunity to discover the city center in the heart of summer, in a unique atmosphere blending popular fervor, imperial splendor, and summer joy.
2026 edition of the Ajaccio Assumption Festival, from August 13th to 15th, coupled with the Napoleonic Days. Three days of religious ceremonies, historical reenactments, parades in period costumes, concerts, and the grand fireworks display on August 15th fired from Ajaccio Bay.
The 2026 Ajaccio Assumption Festival takes place over three days, from Thursday, August 13th to Saturday, August 15th, in the heart of Ajaccio. As every year, it combines the religious ceremonies of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary and the commemoration of the birth of Napoléon Bonaparte, born in Ajaccio on August 15th, 1769.
The 2026 Napoleonic Days, organized by the Office de Tourisme du Pays d'Ajaccio and the Ville d'Ajaccio, animate the historic center for three days: military reenactments in period uniforms, historical bivouacs and encampments, skirmishes in front of the Citadel, parades and changing of the Imperial Guard, imperial dances and music, demonstrations of 19th-century trades (blacksmiths, printers), thematic conferences, exhibitions, and imperial evenings.
Friday, August 15th, 2026, the anniversary of Napoleon's birth and the solemnity of the Assumption, is the peak of the cycle. The recurring structural program includes:
