Corsican polyphonic songs, from April to October at Saint-Dominique Church in Bonifacio
The Polyphonic Thursdays of Bonifacio are a season of Corsican polyphonic concerts organized annually from April to October by the Bonifacio Municipal Tourist Office. The concerts are held at Saint-Dominique Church in the Upper Town of Bonifacio (Corse-du-Sud). Around thirty evenings bring together more than ten island polyphonic groups (Una Fiara Nova, L'Alba, Le Chœur de Sartène, I Campagnoli, Canta U Populu Corsu, Spartera, A Chjama, Terra Mea, Passione, A Pasqualina, Libari, Suarina, Meridianu, Inseme, In Cantu, A Vadina, Missaghju, I Messageri, Vox Corsica, Isulatine…). Created in 1983, the Polyphonic Thursdays have become one of the major cultural events in the Far South of Corsica.
Since 1983, the Polyphonic Thursdays of Bonifacio have offered a series of Corsican polyphonic concerts in the exceptional setting of Saint-Dominique Church, a 13th-century Gothic jewel located in the Upper Town of Bonifacio. The event is organized by the Bonifacio Municipal Tourist Office.
Unlike a festival concentrated over a few days, the Polyphonic Thursdays take place over nearly seven months, with one concert per week (sometimes two in September and October), for about thirty evenings per season. In April, May, and October, concerts begin at 7:00 PM. In June, July, and August, they take place at 9:30 PM. In September, evenings are also scheduled on Mondays in addition to Thursdays.
More than ten Corsican polyphonic groups perform throughout the season: Una Fiara Nova, L'Alba, Le Chœur d'hommes de Sartène, I Campagnoli, Canta U Populu Corsu, Spartera, A Chjama, Terra Mea, Passione, A Pasqualina, Libari, Suarina, Meridianu, Inseme, In Cantu, A Vadina, Missaghju, I Messageri, Vox Corsica, Isulatine. The repertoire blends sacred and secular polyphonies, traditional songs, and contemporary creations, in a venue with remarkable acoustics.
The event plays an essential role in promoting Corsican polyphonic singing, classified as intangible heritage. Before each concert, a tasting of local products is offered at 6:30 PM. Tickets are managed by the Municipal Tourist Office, online at reservation.bonifacio.fr or directly at the office reception.
