Catenacciu
Good Friday Procession in Sartène, Corse-du-Sud
2026
About Catenacciu
The Catenacciu is the most famous of the Holy Week processions in Corsica. Each year, on the evening of Good Friday, the old town of Sartène (Corse-du-Sud) relives Christ's ascent to Calvary during a nocturnal procession full of fervor and contemplation. A hooded red penitent, the Catenacciu ("the chained one"), whose identity is known only to the priest, carries a heavy wooden cross and drags a chain attached to his ankle along a route of approximately 1.8 km through the town's narrow streets. One of the oldest processions in Corsica, it has its roots in the penitent brotherhoods.

The Catenacciu, Good Friday procession in Sartène
The Catenacciu of Sartène is one of the most emblematic religious events in Corse-du-Sud and throughout Corsica. On the evening of Good Friday, the "most Corsican of Corsican towns" lives to the rhythm of this nocturnal procession which reenacts Christ's ascent to Calvary in the narrow streets of the old town.
The red penitent
At the heart of the ceremony, a hooded red penitent — the Catenacciu, "the chained one" — carries a wooden cross and drags a heavy chain attached to his ankle. His identity remains secret: only the parish priest knows it. Along a route of approximately 1.8 km, he must fall three times, like Christ, before the symbolic crucifixion. He is accompanied by a white penitent, black penitents, the clergy, and members of the brotherhood.
A centuries-old tradition
The Catenacciu is among the oldest processions in Corsica. It originates from the penitent brotherhoods (i Battuti), of which the Catenacciu of Sartène remains one of the last living illustrations. Each year, a dense and silent crowd gathers in the old town to witness this moment of contemplation.
