About Ghisonaccia Festival

The Ghisonaccia Festival, or Festa di a San Michele, is the patron saint festival of Saint Michael, patron saint of the commune of Ghisonaccia, in Haute-Corse. Celebrated annually in late September around September 29th, it perpetuates an ancient tradition inherited from the shepherds of the Pieve di Castellu, who thus marked the end of the summer transhumance.

The Ghisonaccia Festival (Festa di a San Michele)

The Ghisonaccia Festival, known by its Corsican name Festa di a San Michele, is the patron saint festival of the commune of Ghisonaccia, in Haute-Corse. It celebrates Saint Michael, the village's patron saint, around his liturgical date of September 29th.

A festival rooted in Corsican tradition

This late September festival finds its roots in the pastoral tradition of the Pieve di Castellu: it was once the time when shepherds descended from the summer pastures and families reunited at the end of the transhumance. Today organized by the Ghisonaccia town hall, it remains a highlight of local life.

Mass, procession, and conviviality

The event combines a religious dimension with a moment of village sharing: mass at Saint-Michel church, a procession through the streets with the brotherhoods, followed by an aperitif and a Corsican meal in the evening, enlivened by traditional songs and music. The precise program is communicated annually by the town hall as the festival approaches.
