A Santa di u Niolu — edition 2026

A Santa di u Niolu is the oldest fair in Corsica and one of its most important religious and traditional festivals. It is held annually in Casamaccioli, in the heart of Niolu (Haute-Corse), around September 8th, the day of the Nativity of the Virgin. For several days, the village combines a Marian pilgrimage, a centuries-old fair, and great Corsican cultural traditions: the Granitula procession, polyphonic songs, and chjam'è rispondi.

Centered around September 8th (Nativity of the Virgin), A Santa di u Niolu annually brings together pilgrims, shepherds, artisans, and visitors from all over Corsica in Casamaccioli, in the heart of Niolu.

Known as the oldest fair on the island (several centuries old), the festival is organized around several highlights:

  • The Marian pilgrimage: veneration of the statue of the Virgin (A Santa di u Niolu) at the Church of the Nativity.
  • A Granitula: a famous spiral procession, one of the most emblematic religious traditions of the island, where brotherhoods unwind and then re-wind a procession in a spiral shape on the fairground.
  • A Fiera: a large fair that brings together over a hundred artisans and producers from all over Corsica (cheeses, cured meats, knives, jewelry, cosmetics, local products).
  • The chjam'è rispondi: improvised poetic jousts sung in the Corsican language.
  • Polyphonic songs and traditional Corsican music.
