Fête de la Musique in Saint-Ouen: One City, a Thousand Musics
Every June 21st, Saint-Ouen-sur-Seine transforms its squares, cultural venues, and streets into a vast open-air music stage. Renowned for its legendary Puces de Saint-Ouen flea market, its Clignancourt market, and its deeply rooted popular culture, Saint-Ouen hosts a Fête de la Musique that reflects its territory: diverse, inventive, and profoundly human.
In recent years, the city has undergone significant urban and cultural transformation with the arrival of the Village des Docks, numerous artists and creators who have set up studios, and the opening of new cultural spaces. This vibrancy is reflected in the rich musical programming on June 21st, which blends popular traditions, urban cultures, and contemporary creations.
Mains d'Œuvres: Hip-Hop Cultures in the Spotlight
Mains d'Œuvres, a multidisciplinary art center housed in a former factory in Saint-Ouen, is one of the most active hubs for Fête de la Musique. Each year, the venue offers original programming that highlights hip-hop cultures in all their forms: dance, rap, beatmaking, slam, graffiti. The 2025 edition notably featured a concert by Lirose (sung rap, soul, hip-hop with roller dance) at 9 PM, followed by a DJ set by Bavardages (hip-hop, house, UK garage) at 10 PM.
Mains d'Œuvres' uniqueness lies in its ability to provide a space for creation and expression for artists from the suburbs, outside conventional circuits. Fête de la Musique here is an open window onto a vibrant and often overlooked local scene.
The Docks Forecourt: Popular Celebration by the Seine
The Docks de Saint-Ouen forecourt, managed by the association Mon Voisin des Docks, hosts a large open-air music festival on June 21st from noon to midnight. Two simultaneous stages offer a musical palette ranging from rock to jazz, hip-hop to world music, with a diversity of styles and artists representative of the city's musical vitality. This free and friendly neighborhood celebration welcomes families, neighbors, and curious visitors in a spirit of sharing and discovery.
The terraces of the bars and restaurants in the Puces de Saint-Ouen also participate in Fête de la Musique with jazz and swing concerts, perpetuating the musical tradition linked to this iconic market, whose history has been intimately connected with manouche jazz and musette since the 1930s.
Manouche Jazz at the Puces
The Puces de Saint-Ouen and their legendary cafés like La Chope des Puces are the cradle of manouche jazz in France. On June 21st, this tradition is expressed with particular intensity: jazz ensembles, manouche guitarists, and accordionists animate the market's alleys and terraces, echoing the memory of Django Reinhardt and Stéphane Grappelli in this historically rich musical venue. It is one of the few places where Fête de la Musique takes on a heritage and memorial dimension.
