Historical and religious procession in Estaing, a listed village in the Lot valley in Aveyron
The Fête de la Saint-Fleuret is a centuries-old tradition celebrated every first Sunday of July in the village of Estaing, classified among the Most Beautiful Villages of France. The event pays homage to Saint Fleuret, Bishop of Auvergne who died in Estaing in 621, the patron saint of the commune. The highlight is a grand historical procession bringing together over 150 costumed volunteers who accompany the reliquary bust of Saint Fleuret through the village streets. The festival also includes a pilgrimage mass, musical entertainment, a parade of flowery bicycles, and a sound and light show on Estaing Castle followed by fireworks on the banks of the Lot.
Every first Sunday of July, the village of Estaing, classified among the Most Beautiful Villages of France, celebrates the Fête de la Saint-Fleuret, its patron saint. This centuries-old tradition pays homage to Saint Fleuret, Bishop of Auvergne who, according to tradition, died in Estaing in 621 on his return from a trip to Rome, after performing a series of miracles there. His cult has been attested since the 15th century, and the procession was re-established in the 19th century as a symbolic, historical, and religious tribute.
The highlight of the festival is the grand historical procession, which starts from Estaing Castle and winds through the village streets. Over 150 costumed volunteers accompany the ancient reliquary bust of Saint Fleuret: saints, members of the clergy, brotherhoods, penitents, and illustrious representatives of the d'Estaing family, a famous lineage that gave France an admiral. In the past, pilgrims from Cantal, Lozère, and Haut Rouergue came to have bread and salt blessed to protect their homes and animals.
The day is marked by a pilgrimage mass, the procession at 11:30 AM, followed by musical entertainment with brass bands and a parade of flowery bicycles through the village streets. The evening offers a sound and light show projected onto the facade of Estaing Castle, followed by fireworks launched from the banks of the Lot, providing a magical finale.
The village of Estaing, dominated by its Castle, a classified Historic Monument, and crossed by the Lot River, is an emblematic stop on the Way of Saint James of Compostela. Its Gothic bridge, medieval streets, and the 15th-century Saint-Fleuret church form an exceptional heritage setting for this traditional festival. The castle, acquired by former president Valéry Giscard d'Estaing, adds a particular historical dimension to this event.
