Immersive medieval festival in the classified village of Estaing in Aveyron
Every second weekend of September, the village of Estaing, classified among the Most Beautiful Villages of France and inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage list as part of the Santiago de Compostela pilgrimage routes, transforms into a vast medieval theater. Les Médiévales d'Estaing invite visitors to dive into the world of the Middle Ages for two days of festivities, shows, and discoveries.
The originality of Les Médiévales d'Estaing lies in its Medieval Challenge, an interactive and immersive experience that transports participants on an adventure through time. Visitors explore the historic alleys, ancient buildings, and corners of the castle while solving riddles and taking on challenges inspired by the Middle Ages. Locals dressed as medieval characters—knights, princesses, troubadours—animate the encounters and guide the participants.
The festival program includes troubadour shows, medieval music concerts, craft demonstrations, and a medieval market offering artisanal products and gastronomic specialties inspired by the era. The village streets come alive with jugglers, fire-eaters, musicians, and actors in period costumes, creating a festive and immersive atmosphere.
Estaing Castle, a listed Historic Monument, has overlooked the village and the Lot since the 11th century. This imposing edifice, linked to the famous Estaing family which gave France an admiral, provides the ideal setting for this medieval festival. The Gothic bridge crossing the Lot, the medieval alleys, and the Saint-Fleuret church complete this exceptional decor.
The Estaing Medievales return on September 12th and 13th, 2026, true to the second weekend of September, for their 28th edition. For a weekend, troupes and volunteers immerse the classified village in the atmosphere of the 13th century.
The usual festival program includes: a medieval market, a parade of inhabitants in period costumes, troubadour music, street shows, activities in the castle courtyards (some shows are paid), the Tristan Challenge (medieval-inspired trials where the winner is knighted in the public square), as well as a tavern and a medieval banquet on Saturday evening. Visitors are invited to come in costume.
The detailed day-by-day program (activity schedules, banquet, castle shows) is published annually on the Estaing Medievales Facebook page and on the commune's website as the event approaches.
By car: Estaing is located 35 km north of Rodez via the D920 towards Espalion, then the D921. Free parking at the entrance of the village.
Saturday and Sunday: 10 am to 6 pm (animations until the evening on Saturday).
Access to the village and animations is free. Some specific activities may be subject to a fee.
