Bezons, a working-class town on the Seine

Bezons (95870) is a commune in the Val-d'Oise department with approximately 29,000 inhabitants, one of the smallest and densest in the department. Located on the banks of the Seine, opposite Colombes and Gennevilliers to the south and visible from La Défense to the southwest, Bezons is a town with a unique geography: squeezed between the Seine, the railway line, and neighboring communes, it has developed a strong identity around its industrial and working-class traditions.

Bezons was for a long time a town of factories and workshops, notably with the Saint-Gobain factory established there in the 19th century. Today, the town is transforming with urban renovation projects and the development of the Seine riverbanks district, but it retains its popular character and dense network of associations.

Fireworks opposite La Défense

The July 14th fireworks in Bezons are among the most spectacular in the Val-d'Oise, thanks to an exceptional setting. Launched from the banks of the Seine, the pyrotechnic show unfolds against the backdrop of the illuminated skyline of La Défense, Europe's leading business district. This visual contrast between the republican fireworks and the glass towers of contemporary capitalism creates a striking and emblematic image of France today.

The banks of the Seine in Bezons, redeveloped in recent years, offer an ideal space for walking and gathering for the July 14th festivities. Families settle on the lawns along the river, with their feet in the grass, to watch the show. The width of the Seine at this point allows for an unobstructed view of the fireworks and the surrounding urban landscape.

The working-class and popular identity of Bezons

The popular balls on July 14th in Bezons reflect the town's working-class and popular identity. In this republican tradition dating back to the 19th century, the inhabitants of Bezons gather to dance and celebrate, perpetuating a culture of community and shared festivities. Bezons' cultural diversity, a welcoming town for a wide variety of communities, enriches these moments of celebration.

Neighborhood entertainment organized throughout the day of July 14th allows residents from different parts of the town to participate in the celebration without having to travel to the riverbanks. Children's games, collective picnics, concerts, and exhibitions contribute to making July 14th a local celebration as well as a spectacle.

Bezons in the Grand Paris metropolis

Bezons is a member of the Saint-Germain Boucles de Seine agglomeration community and is part of the Grand Paris metropolitan dynamic. The redevelopment projects for the Seine riverbanks, the development of the business district adjacent to La Défense, and transport projects (extension of RER E, future Grand Paris Express lines) are gradually transforming Bezons.

The Fête Nationale de Bezons is part of this context of urban and social transformation: it is an anchor, a reminder of the town's popular and working-class identity amidst the changes. The fireworks opposite La Défense are thus laden with symbolism: the working-class town celebrating the Republic under the gaze of the global finance towers.
