Getariako Bestak — Summer festival and patronal feast of Saint-Nicolas in Guéthary
The Fêtes de Guéthary, called Getariako Bestak in Basque, bring together residents and visitors of the charming coastal village of Guéthary every year at the end of August for a weekend of festivities combining Basque traditions and summer entertainment. The program includes foot races, a giant méchoui, a craft and gastronomic fair, Basque dances, live music, and flamenco shows. Guéthary also celebrates its patronal feast of Saint-Nicolas at the beginning of December. Perched on the cliffs between Bidart and Saint-Jean-de-Luz, the village offers an exceptional setting for these moments of sharing and Basque conviviality.
Every end of August, the village of Guéthary vibrates to the rhythm of its summer festivals, the Getariako Bestak. This annual event brings together the Guéthary community and the many visitors of the Basque coast for a weekend of warm and friendly festivities, marked by the diversity of entertainment and the authenticity of Basque traditions.
The Fêtes de Guéthary offer a rich and varied program that reflects the multiple identities of the village. On Saturday, the festivities begin with original sporting events such as the harbor swim, an omelette contest, and the legendary "impossible bike climb of the harbor," events that testify to the playful and convivial spirit of the Guéthariotes. On Sunday, the traditional méchoui brings together several hundred guests in the village square, accompanied by Basque music groups. The afternoon features a flamenco show, demonstrating the cultural ties between the Northern and Southern Basque Country.
The true patronal feast of Guéthary is celebrated at the beginning of December around Saint-Nicolas, patron saint of the parish and sailors. This winter festival, more intimate than the summer festivities, honors the maritime heritage of the village, a former whaling port that has retained its authentic charm. The solemn mass in Saint-Nicolas church, Basque songs, and community traditions perpetuate the link between Guéthary and its centuries-old history.
Guéthary, one of the smallest municipalities on the Basque coast, captivates with its preserved authenticity. Its narrow streets, its miniature harbor nestled in the hollow of the cliffs, its contemporary art museum, and its legendary waves that attract surfers from all over the world make it a unique place. The Fêtes de Guéthary are part of this singular atmosphere, where the Basque art of living combines with the energy of the Atlantic Ocean and the warmth of the Labourd traditions.
The Fêtes de Guéthary 2026 will be held from August 28th to 30th with festive entertainment, a méchoui, Basque dances, and shows. Detailed program to come.
