About Basque Strength Bidart

The Bidart Basque Strength Festival is a must-attend summer event held every Monday evening from late July to late August at the Grand Fronton in Bidart, avenue Chabadenia. Organized by the association Alegera, this festival offers five evenings of demonstrations and competitions of traditional Basque strength disciplines: stone lifting (harrijasotzaile), log cutting (aizkolariak), tug-of-war (soka-tira), cart lifting (orga joko), straw bale lifting, and sack races. A true showcase of Basque sporting traditions, the festival also invites the public to participate in certain events, in a spirit of transmission and sharing.

Basque Strength, an Ancestral Sporting Tradition

The Bidart Basque Strength Festival perpetuates a sporting tradition deeply rooted in Basque culture. What were once challenges between young farmers has become a competition between villages, each willingly putting their strength at the service of the community whose honor they defend. The game is an integral part of the Basque soul, and the Bidart festival offers a vivid and spectacular illustration of it every summer.

Five Summer Mondays at the Grand Fronton

From late July to late August, the Grand Fronton in Bidart, located on avenue Chabadenia, hosts five exceptional evenings dedicated to Basque strength events. Every Monday evening at 9 PM, spectators discover or rediscover the emblematic disciplines: the harrijasotzaile (stone lifting), where athletes lift stone blocks of over 100 kg; the aizkolari (log cutting), a test of speed and endurance with an axe; the soka-tira (tug-of-war), a collective test of pure strength; and the orga joko (cart lifting), a demonstration of raw power.

A Participatory and Family Festival

The originality of the Bidart Basque Strength Festival lies in its participatory dimension. Some games are open to the public, inviting spectators to experience Basque strength from the inside and pass on this passion to new generations. This approach, driven by the association Alegera, the festival's band and organizer, makes the festival a moment of intergenerational sharing where attention to roots and the transmission of traditions are at the heart of the project.

Bidart, Land of Basque Traditions

Bidart, a coastal village located between Biarritz and Guéthary on the Basque coast, is a place where Basque traditions remain particularly vibrant. The Grand Fronton, an emblematic venue for Basque pelota, transforms into a Basque strength arena every summer, offering an authentic and friendly setting for these traditional sporting events. The festive atmosphere is enhanced by the presence of the Alegera band and the entertainment accompanying each evening, making these summer Mondays a must-attend event of the summer season on the Basque coast.

Basque Strength Bidart — edition 2026

The Bidart Basque Strength Festival returns in summer 2026 for a new season of shows at the Grand Fronton, avenue Chabadenia (RD810). Every Monday evening at 9 PM, from mid-July to late August, two local teams compete in the traditional Basque strength events: stone lifting (harrijasotzaile), log chopping (aizkolari), tug-of-war (soka-tira), straw bale lifting with a pulley, sack race, and cart lifting (orga joko). Some games are open to the public.

2026 Edition

The Bidart Basque Strength Festival takes place over seven Monday evenings, from July 13 to August 24, 2026 (Mondays July 13, 20 and 27, then August 3, 10, 17 and 24), from 9 PM to 11 PM at the Grand Fronton in Bidart.

Each evening, two local Basque strength teams compete in the emblematic disciplines of this sporting tradition: stone lifting, log chopping with an axe, tug-of-war, straw bale lifting with a pulley, sack race, and cart lifting. Several events are open to the public, who can try their luck and experience Basque strength from within.

The event is animated by the Batterie Fanfare Alegera, the organizing association, which adds its festive touch to these summer Mondays on the Basque coast.
