Autumn celebration of the emblematic fruit of the Cévennes
The Chestnut Festival of Vialas celebrates each autumn the emblematic fruit of the Cévennes in this charming village nestled at the foot of Mont Lozère. Organized by the local festival committee, this friendly day offers a local market with regional producers, 'affachades' (traditional Cévennes dances) animated by Les Boulégaïres, a shared aperitif, and a grand festive meal featuring sausage-aligot and chestnut cake. The evening continues with a dance party. This popular event allows visitors to discover the flavors and traditions of the Cévennes centered around this fruit that has nourished generations of locals.
In the Cévennes, the chestnut is much more than just a fruit: it is a symbol of identity deeply rooted in the region's history. Nicknamed the "bread tree" by the locals, the chestnut tree has fed generations of mountain inhabitants. The Chestnut Festival of Vialas perpetuates this tradition by celebrating this unique culinary and cultural heritage every autumn.
From the afternoon onwards, a market of local producers sets up in the village of Vialas. Exhibitors offer products from the Cévennes region: jams, honey, cheeses, cured meats, chestnuts in all their forms (fresh, cream, flour), and other artisanal specialties. It's an opportunity to meet the producers and discover local know-how.
The afternoon is also enlivened by an 'affachade', a Cévennes tradition of popular dances and music. The group Les Boulégaïres revives the traditional rhythms and dance steps, drawing visitors into a joyful and participatory circle. Face painting for children and a candy hunt complete the family entertainment.
In the evening, a grand friendly meal brings guests together around the table. The menu highlights local specialties with the traditional sausage-aligot and a chestnut cake for dessert. The meal is offered at €15 for adults and €12 for children, with the option of takeaway meals for €10. Reservations are made by SMS to the organizers.
After the meal, the festival continues with a dance party that animates the village until late in the evening. This festive and warm atmosphere makes the Chestnut Festival a moment of sharing appreciated by both locals and visitors passing through the Lozère Cévennes.
Nestled at an altitude of 600 meters at the foot of Mont Lozère, the village of Vialas is a concentrate of Cévennes authenticity.
