The annual celebration of the rose in one of France's most beautiful villages
The Gerberoy Rose Festival is a century-old tradition that celebrates the blooming rose every first Sunday of June in one of France's most beautiful villages. Created in 1928 by the post-impressionist painter Henri Le Sidaner, this annual festival transforms the village of Gerberoy, in the Oise region, into a vast open-air garden. Rose growers, nursery owners, local artists, and artisans set up in the village's cobbled streets for a day of discovering old and modern rose varieties, concerts, children's activities, and floral parades.
Since 1928, on the first Sunday of June, the village of Gerberoy celebrates its emblem: the rose. This tradition was established by the post-impressionist painter Henri Le Sidaner, who settled in this Picardy village in 1901 and set about transforming it into a rose garden. Nearly a century later, the Rose Festival continues this heritage with unwavering enthusiasm.
Gerberoy, listed among the Most Beautiful Villages of France, offers a magical setting for this floral celebration. Its cobbled streets, half-timbered houses, and walled gardens overflowing with roses create an enchanting backdrop that attracts thousands of visitors each year. For one day, the entire village becomes a vast open-air garden.
Dozens of rose growers and nursery owners from all over France present their finest varieties of old and modern roses. Visitors can admire hundreds of varieties, receive gardening advice, and leave with a rose bush, including the famous Β« Rose de Gerberoy Β», a creation with soft hues and a fruity scent that has become the village's emblem.
Painters, sculptors, ceramicists, and craftspeople exhibit their creations inspired by the rose and the village. Food artisans offer rose-based specialties: jams, syrups, Turkish delight, macarons, and other fragrant treats.
Throughout the day, concerts liven up the village squares and gardens. Costumed parades and children's activities complete the program, making this festival a quintessential family event.
The Henri Le Sidaner garden, a listed Remarkable Garden, is one of the highlights of the visit. This terraced garden, created by the painter himself, offers an exceptional panorama of the Picardy countryside and houses a remarkable collection of old roses.
