The great popular mussel and fries festival on the Opal Coast
The Wimereux Mussel Festival is a popular and gastronomic festival organized each year in July at Baie Saint-Jean in Wimereux, a seaside resort on the Opal Coast. For decades, this festive tradition has brought together thousands of guests around large communal tables to enjoy the North's emblematic dish: mussels and fries. The event also features a parade of decorated floats, brass bands, majorettes, a cabaret show on Sunday, and a night parade on Saturday evening.
Every July, the seaside resort of Wimereux celebrates the most emblematic dish of Northern France: mussels and fries. The Mussel Festival, organized since the 1970s, has become a must-attend summer event on the Opal Coast. For an entire weekend, the Baie Saint-Jean transforms into a huge open-air banquet hall.
What makes the Mussel Festival unique and charming are the large communal tables set up outdoors along the bay. Hundreds of guests gather to share mussels and fries in a warm and friendly atmosphere, typically 'ch'ti'. This tradition of communal dining embodies the spirit of sharing and fraternity that characterizes popular festivals on the northern coast.
The Mussel Festival is not just about gastronomy. A grand parade of decorated floats goes through the town, accompanied by brass bands, majorettes, and musical groups. This colorful and festive procession livens up the streets of Wimereux and creates a summer carnival atmosphere that delights young and old alike.
The festival program includes numerous activities:
Wimereux, a town with the seaside resort label, offers a magnificent setting for this festival. The Baie Saint-Jean, with its promenade dike and Belle Γpoque villas in the background, provides a unique backdrop for an event that celebrates both the flavors of the sea and the northern French art of living.
