The Festival of the King: Pau celebrates Henry IV

The Festival of the King is a historical and festive event that pays homage to Henry IV, the favorite king of the people of Pau, born in the Château de Pau in 1553. Every year in July, the Château district transforms into an open-air theater, immersing visitors in three distinct eras over three thematic days.

Three Days, Three Eras

The first day is dedicated to the Middle Ages, with a medieval artisan market featuring blacksmiths, stonemasons, woodturners, wood sculptors, leatherworkers, and glassblowers. Fencing demonstrations, archery, and falconry shows liven up the streets, followed by a grand medieval parade in the late afternoon and a theatrical performance by the Cour des Miracles in the evening.

The second day celebrates the Renaissance, with the arrival of King Henry IV on horseback, a grand parade of costumed figures, equestrian shows, carriage rides, and street entertainment. The historical figures of Gaston Fébus, Quasimodo, and Esmeralda accompany the festivities.

The third day highlights Bearnese traditions, with a traditional mass at the Saint-Martin church, a royal banquet featuring local products, and a festive closing in the early afternoon.

An Event in the Heart of the Historic District

The Festival of the King takes place in the Château district, one of Pau's oldest, along the Boulevard du Midi, the Place de la Déportation, and adjacent streets, with the majestic Château de Pau as a backdrop. This exceptional historical setting gives the event a unique atmosphere, blending popular celebration with historical reenactment.

A Project Supported by Local Stakeholders

Organized by the Association des Commerçants du Quartier du Château (Château District Merchants Association) and the association Le Panache Blanc (The White Plume), the Festival of the King unites merchants, artisans, artists, and volunteers around a common project: to bring the history of Pau and Béarn to life through a popular, friendly, and accessible event for everyone.

Festival of the King — edition 2026

The third edition of the Festival of the King will be held at the end of July 2026 in the Château de Pau district. The event will again offer three thematic days celebrating the Middle Ages, the Renaissance, and Bearnese traditions in homage to Henry IV.

Festival of the King 2026 – Third Edition

The Festival of the King returns at the end of July 2026 to the Château de Pau district for its third edition. True to its concept of three thematic days – medieval, Renaissance, and Bearnese – the event will continue to bring the history of Béarn to life and celebrate the memory of Henry IV in an exceptional historical setting.
