Montsalvy, Small City of Character

Montsalvy is a medieval village located in the heart of the Châtaigneraie cantalienne, in the south of Cantal, labeled "Petite Cité de Caractère". Its origins date back to the 11th century, when Bérenger, lord of the place, donated a territory to the monk Gausbert, who founded a church, a hospice, and a monastery there. Remarkable architectural testimonies remain from this era: the Abbatiale Notre-Dame de l'Assomption, the Réfectoire des Moines, and the vestiges of the monastery, which give Montsalvy its unique charm.

The Abbey Church, with its Gothic nave and Romanesque portal, is one of the most remarkable monuments in southern Cantal. The Monks' Refectory, built in the 14th century, is a large hall with four bays and a Gothic vault rebuilt in the 1990s (the original having been destroyed in 1910). This place now hosts exhibitions and concerts, offering exceptional acoustics and atmosphere.

The Patronal Festival: a weekend of festivities

The patronal festival of Montsalvy is held each year around August 15th, the feast of the Assumption, patron saint of the abbey church. This festive weekend, organized by the Comité d'Animation de Montsalvy, brings together locals, former residents, and visitors for three days of celebration in the exceptional setting of this medieval city.

Concerts are one of the highlights of the patronal festival. The Abbey Church and the Monks' Refectory serve as backdrops for musical performances that benefit from the remarkable acoustics of these historic buildings. Traditional music groups, popular music, or jazz bands perform in these historic venues, creating a unique atmosphere blending heritage and festivity.

Events and traditions

The program includes numerous popular events: a pétanque competition (boule carrée) that attracts enthusiasts, a parade of vintage tractors recalling the region's agricultural heritage, fairground rides for children's delight, and festive outdoor meals. On Sunday, a solemn mass is celebrated at 6 PM in the abbey church, followed by a wreath-laying ceremony at the war memorial and a closing reception.

The fireworks display, held on Saturday evening, illuminates the medieval village and is a spectacular moment eagerly awaited by residents and visitors. This pyrotechnic tradition, set against the backdrop of Montsalvy's streets and lauze-stone roofs, creates a special magic.

An exceptional heritage setting

The patronal festival is an opportunity to discover or rediscover the remarkable heritage of Montsalvy: the medieval streets, half-timbered houses, the abbey church and the monks' refectory, but also the green landscapes of the Châtaigneraie cantalienne, a land of wooded hills and ancient chestnut trees. The numerous hiking trails around Montsalvy allow for a combination of celebration and nature discovery.
