Summer festivals between the lake and the ocean on the Landes Coast
The Fêtes de Saint-Julien-en-Born liven up this village on the Landes Coast every August, located between the Mimizan lake and the Atlantic Ocean. Organized by the festival committee, these festivities offer a friendly program over several days: aperitif-concerts, wheelbarrow races, outdoor steak-and-fries meals, lantern processions led by the banda Lous Mayouns, pétanque tournaments, a spectacular fireworks display, and DJ dance nights. These summer festivals celebrate the Landes art of living in a relaxed atmosphere.
Located between the Mimizan lake to the north and the Contis beaches to the west, the village of Saint-Julien-en-Born celebrates its local festivals every summer with the conviviality that characterizes the towns of the Landes Coast. For several days in August, this village of about 1,700 inhabitants, whose population increases tenfold during the summer due to seaside tourism, comes alive to the rhythm of bandas, outdoor meals, and popular entertainment.
The banda Lous Mayouns is the emblematic musical group of the Fêtes de Saint-Julien-en-Born. This local brass band livens up the passe-rues, these nocturnal strolls through the village streets illuminated by lanterns. The lantern procession, led by the banda, creates a magical atmosphere in the village alleys, drawing the festival-goers into a musical and luminous procession that has become the signature of these festivals.
The aperitif-concerts, offered in the early evening, bring together locals and vacationers around live music. Bands like H(art)Moniques liven up these moments of conviviality where people share a drink while listening to music in the gentle summer evenings. These open-air musical events have become a highlight of the Saint-Julien festivities.
Outdoor meals are at the heart of the Fêtes de Saint-Julien-en-Born. The steak-and-fries dinner at €12, the grillades-and-fries at €7, and the gourmet menus served under marquees bring together hundreds of guests in a warm atmosphere. These popular gatherings, where friends, neighbors, and vacationers eat elbow-to-elbow, embody the spirit of sharing of the Landes festivals.
The wheelbarrow race, a fun and quirky tradition, is one of the most popular events of the festivals. Participants, often in costume, compete in a comical race that makes the crowd lining the course laugh and cheer. This good-natured competition symbolizes the festive and humorous spirit of these village festivals.
The fireworks display, launched at 10:30 PM, is the highlight of the festivals. This pyrotechnic show lights up the sky of Saint-Julien-en-Born and attracts spectators from all neighboring towns. The evenings continue with DJ dance parties, with the Killersound stages keeping festival-goers dancing from 11 PM to 2 AM.
The program also includes pétanque tournaments open to all on Sunday afternoons, children's games, and street entertainment. These daytime activities complement a balanced program that offers moments of celebration for every age group, from the morning aperitif-concert to the evening dance.
The festivals take place in the center of Saint-Julien-en-Born (40170), on the main square. Contis beach is 7 km to the west.
The festivals are held every year in August, generally around August 8th to 10th, over two to three days. In 2025, Sunday, August 10th was the main day with the fireworks.
Meals served outdoors in the village square. Bars open throughout the festivities.
