Summer festivals in the heart of the Landes forest
The Fêtes de Mézos liven up this village in the Grande Lande every early August, located on the route of the lakes, between Mimizan and Parentis-en-Born. Organized by the festival committee, these festivities offer two days of revelry with bandas on Friday evening, chipirons meals, Landes stilt walkers, musical groups, barbecues, dance evenings animated by DJs, and a festive atmosphere typical of the Landes. These summer festivals perpetuate the village traditions of the Grande Lande forest.
Nestled in the heart of the Grande Lande, between the pine forest and the large Landes lakes, the village of Mézos celebrates its local festivals every early August. This commune of about 900 inhabitants, located on the road connecting Mimizan to Parentis-en-Born, comes alive for two days to the rhythm of bandas, festive meals, and dance evenings, in the purest tradition of Landes village festivals.
Friday evening marks the opening of the festivities with the first notes of the bandas. These traveling brass bands, emblems of Landes festive culture, parade through the village streets playing lively tunes that immediately put the village in a festive mood. The Friday evening meal, served outdoors, features traditional chipirons (squid), an essential specialty of Landes festivals, accompanied by fries and local wine.
The presence of the Landes stilt walkers on Saturday is a tribute to the history of the Grande Lande. Before the draining of the marshes and the planting of the pine forest in the 19th century, Landes shepherds moved around on tchanques (stilts) to watch their flocks in the vast marshy expanses. Today, the stilt walkers perpetuate this age-old tradition by parading at festivals, reminding visitors of the deep identity of this territory.
The festival meals are a highlight of the Mézos festivities. On Friday, chipirons-frites bring guests together in a musical atmosphere. On Saturday, local meat barbecues are served outdoors, accompanied by salads and homemade desserts. These popular gatherings, set up under the plane trees or tents, are a meeting place for permanent residents and holidaymakers from nearby campsites and vacation rentals.
The evenings of the Fêtes de Mézos are animated by musical groups and DJs who get festival-goers dancing in the village square. On Saturday evening, the dance party continues until the early hours of the morning in a festive and friendly atmosphere. The musical program, varied and accessible, attracts an audience of all ages.
Mézos is also known for its Hemp Festival in mid-August, which celebrates the traditional hemp cultivation in the Landes. The summer festivals, more classic in format, are nonetheless an important event in village life. The festival committee, supported by volunteers and associations, perpetuates these festive traditions that strengthen social bonds and community identity in the heart of the Landes forest.
The festivals take place in the center of Mézos village (40170), on the main square. Mézos is located 15 km east of Mimizan and 20 km north of Parentis-en-Born.
The summer festivals are held every year in early August, usually the first weekend of the month, over two days (Friday and Saturday). In 2025, they were scheduled for August 1st and 2nd.
Meals are served on Friday evening (chipirons) and Saturday (barbecues). Bars are open throughout the festival.
