Hossegor Cesta Punta Master Pro: The Elite of Basque Pelota

Every summer, the Jaï Alaï of Soorts-Hossegor vibrates to the rhythm of cesta punta, the queen discipline of Basque pelota. The Hossegor Cesta Punta Master Pro brings together the best players in the world, from France and Spain, for a professional tournament that runs from July to August and is one of the major sporting events on the Landes coast.

The Jaï Alaï of Hossegor: A Legendary Venue

The Jaï Alaï of Hossegor is the oldest covered court in France, a place steeped in history where the first World Championships were held in 1958. This majestic arena, with its wooden stands and unique atmosphere, offers an exceptional setting for watching the matches. The acoustics of the venue amplify the crack of the ball against the fronton, creating an incomparable sensory experience.

Cesta Punta: Spectacular Sport

Cesta punta (or jai alai) is considered the fastest ball sport in the world. Players, equipped with a chistera (an elongated wicker glove), propel the ball against the fronton at speeds exceeding 300 km/h. The rallies are lightning-fast and require extraordinary agility, power, and precision:

  • Power: Shots reach speeds of 300 km/h, making cesta punta the fastest racket sport
  • Agility: Players combine receptions and returns in an impressive athletic ballet
  • Strategy: Each point is played tactically, with placements, smashes, and drop shots

Tournament Format

The Master Pro takes place over several weeks, with matches on Monday and Wednesday evenings throughout the summer. The format includes several qualification phases (Masters) leading to a grand final where the top four players compete for the title. Each evening features multiple matches, allowing spectators to enjoy several hours of intense sporting action.

Between Tradition and Modernity

The Hossegor Cesta Punta Master Pro continues the centuries-old tradition of Basque pelota in the Landes region. Hossegor, a seaside resort renowned for surfing and its lifestyle, adds a Basque cultural dimension to its identity with this tournament. The event attracts a diverse audience, from pelota enthusiasts to holidaymakers curious to discover this fascinating sport in an exceptional setting.
