Rion des Landes in Celebration: The Great Gascon Bullfighting Tradition

In the heart of the Landes de Gascogne, between Mont-de-Marsan and Dax, Rion-des-Landes is a village of character that comes alive every late August for its patron saint festivals. For four days, from Friday to Monday, the commune lives to the rhythm of a major bullfighting program organized by the Cercle Taurin Rionnais, accompanied by bandas, parades, and entertainment that make it one of the most popular festivals in the department.

A Complete and Diverse Bullfighting Program

The Rion-des-Landes arenas host an exceptionally rich and varied bullfighting program that delights both aficionados and newcomers. On Friday evening, a formal Landes race opens the festivities with the best 'écarteurs' and 'sauteurs' of the season. On Saturday afternoon, a cocarde contest tests the skill and courage of the participants. Sunday is the big bullfighting day with two novilladas (young bull races), the first in the morning and the second in the late afternoon. On Monday, a capéa in the late afternoon gives way to a comic-bullfighting gala in the evening, a humorous spectacle in the arena that concludes the festivities in good spirits.

The Cercle Taurin Rionnais: Guardian of Tradition

The Cercle Taurin Rionnais is the organizer of the festival's bullfighting program. This passionate association selects the breeders, 'écarteurs', and bullfighters who will perform in the arenas, ensuring the quality of the shows and respect for traditions. Ticket sales open about two weeks before the festival, and the most sought-after tickets sell out quickly, demonstrating the enthusiasm of aficionados for the Rion festival.

Bandas, Parades, and Festive Atmosphere

Outside the arenas, the streets of Rion-des-Landes vibrate to the sound of bandas parading through the village, leading the 'festayres' dressed in white and red. The 'peñas' set up their stands in the main square, offering tapas, grilled meats, and drinks in a friendly atmosphere. Popular balls liven up the evenings, with orchestras and DJs making the Rionnais and their visitors dance until the first light of dawn.

Outdoor Meals and Gascon Hospitality

The Rion festival is also an opportunity to share generous outdoor meals that honor Gascon gastronomy. Grilled duck breast with vine shoots, Landes salad, confit, and pastis landais make up menus that bring together hundreds of guests under marquees. The traditional fireworks display illuminates the Rionnais sky, while the early risers gather for the traditional festival breakfast with tripe, an essential ritual of the Landes festivals.
