The Fêtes de Labenne: Between Ocean and Landaise Traditions
Located in the extreme south of the Landes coast, at the gateway to the Pays Basque, Labenne is a family-friendly seaside resort that combines the pleasures of the ocean with Gascon traditions. Its summer local festivals are a major event of the summer, attracting holidaymakers from surrounding campsites and residents of the southern Landes for several days of colorful and friendly festivities.
The Intervaches: A Unique Family Spectacle
The main attraction of Labenne's summer evenings, the Intervaches, takes place every Thursday evening in July and August at the Labenne-Océan arena. This family show features Landaise cows in arena games pitting two teams against each other: the Labenne team against the public. Doors open at 8:30 PM for a show at 9:15 PM that lasts about two hours, in a good-natured atmosphere where laughter mixes with thrills. A ring toss game for children completes the program, while a bar and light refreshments are available on site.
Bandas and Festive Atmosphere in the Streets
During the local festivals, bandas from the Southwest invade the streets of Labenne, accompanying the festayres dressed in white and colors in joyful and lively parades. Brass and percussion instruments resonate from the village square to the beach, creating a festive link between the traditional village and the seaside resort. Peñas and casetas set up in the squares offer tapas, sangria, and musical entertainment throughout the evenings.
Les Plages Musicales and the Banana Festival
Les Plages Musicales offer free concerts every Wednesday and Friday evening in Labenne-Océan throughout the summer, with artists of various styles performing facing the ocean. The Banana Festival, held in early August at the Théâtre de Verdure, has become a must-see musical event that highlights local and regional talent in a green and intimate setting.
Country Meals and Family Entertainment
The Fêtes de Labenne are distinguished by their family-friendly and convivial nature. Country meals bring guests together for barbecues, mussels and fries, and Landaise specialties. Entertainment for children—inflatable games, face painting, treasure hunts—coexist with pétanque tournaments, surf competitions, and the traditional fireworks display from the beach. Popular balls and themed evenings extend the festivities late into the summer night.
