The Fêtes de Lit-et-Mixe: Landes tradition in the heart of the Pays de Born
Nestled between the Atlantic Ocean and the pine forest of the Landes de Gascogne, the commune of Lit-et-Mixe perpetuates a festive tradition deeply rooted in Landes culture every summer. Its patron saint's festivals, organized in mid-July, are a must-attend event for the inhabitants and holidaymakers of the Landes coast, offering four days of festivities that combine Gascon traditions and convivial entertainment.
Bandas and parades in the village streets
From the opening of the festivals, the bandas invade the streets of Lit-et-Mixe to set the tone for the festivities. The Banda Lous Mayouns and other musical groups from the Southwest parade through the village, leading the revellers into a joyful and lively atmosphere. The peñas set up in the village square offer tapas, sangria, and musical entertainment from Thursday evening onwards, notably the Peña 40 which opens the festivities around the bandstand.
Landes Bullfights and Taurine Tradition
The arenas of Lit-et-Mixe host Landes bullfights during the festivals, an emblematic spectacle of Gascon culture where the 'écarteurs' (bull dodgers) and 'sauteurs' (jumpers) compete in daring and elegance against the racing bulls. These events, organized in collaboration with local breeders, perpetuate an ancestral art inscribed in the intangible cultural heritage of France. The arenas also resonate with the sound of the bandas that traditionally accompany each fight.
Country Meals and Landes Gastronomy
The Lit-et-Mixe festivals are also an opportunity to share generous country meals that bring together villagers and visitors around long, convivial tables. The traditional paella dinner on Friday evening, grilled duck magret, Landes tapas, and pastis landais for dessert make up a gastronomic program that honors the flavors of the Gascon terroir. The refreshment stands and food stalls set up in the square offer local specialties to enjoy with music throughout the festivals.
Popular Balls and Festive Entertainment
Each evening of the festivals continues with a popular ball that gets people dancing until the early hours of the morning. Orchestras and DJs take turns offering a varied repertoire, from banda standards to summer hits. The days are marked by entertainment for all ages: traditional Landes games, scooter races, pétanque tournaments, children's activities, and the traditional fireworks display that lights up the village sky. The parade of floats and costumed groups through the village streets is one of the highlights of the festivities.
