FIMU: Belfort, World Capital of Music During Pentecost
Since its first edition in 1986, the Festival International de Musique Universitaire (FIMU) has established itself as one of the most unique musical events in France and Europe. Organized annually by the City of Belfort with the support of student associations, FIMU transforms the heart of Belfort into an open-air stage for four days where music rhymes with freeness and conviviality.
A One-of-a-Kind Festival
What sets FIMU apart from all other festivals is its total accessibility: all concerts are free and open to everyone. No paid entry, no tickets to book – just come and let the music fill your senses. This philosophy of freeness, rare for a festival of this scale, has been FIMU's identity mark since its origins.
Each edition hosts around 1,000 to 2,000 musicians from about forty countries, representing diverse ensembles such as university orchestras, jazz bands, world music ensembles, wind bands, choirs, and contemporary music groups. More than 220 concerts are offered on the main stages of the Place d'Armes, the park, and in various venues across the city.
A Country Honored Each Year
The tradition of the guest of honor country is one of the most appreciated aspects of FIMU. Each edition highlights a country or region of the world through its music, dances, traditions, and gastronomy. This cultural dimension makes FIMU much more than a music festival: it is a true window to the world, a sonic journey accessible to the whole family.
The 2025 Edition: Venezuela in the Spotlight
For its 38th edition, from June 5 to 8, 2025, FIMU will honor Venezuela. The godmother of the edition is La Chica, a renowned Franco-Venezuelan singer and composer. Three Venezuelan groups will make the trip to Belfort, including Raúl Monsalve y Los Forajidos, an ensemble blending Afro-Venezuelan rhythms and electric jazz.
The 2026 Edition: Belgium in the Spotlight
FIMU 2026 (May 21-24) will honor Belgium, chosen for its exceptional contribution to French-language chanson and the contemporary international pop scene. A rich program is expected with renowned Belgian ensembles alongside the usual 1,000 musicians from all corners of the globe.
Musical Diversity at the Heart of the Project
FIMU embraces all musical forms: classical, jazz, world, folk, pop, rock, metal, hip-hop, electronic music, traditional music – all genres coexist during a Pentecost weekend in a fraternal and festive atmosphere. Concerts take place simultaneously on several stages, allowing festival-goers to create their own program as they wander.
