An Exceptional 17th-Century Organ
The organ of the Saint-Jean-Baptiste church of Chaource is a remarkable instrument, built in 1696 by the organ builder Louis Lebe. Classified as a Historic Monument, this organ has undergone meticulous restoration that has restored its original sound, allowing listeners to hear the timbres as they resonated in the church over three centuries ago. The exceptional quality of this instrument, its unique sonic aesthetic, and the remarkable acoustics of the Gothic church make it a jewel of French musical heritage.
Organists from Around the World in Chaource
The International Organ Festival attracts internationally renowned organists from all over the world each year to discover and perform works on this instrument with its particularly unique style. The repertoire ranges from Baroque music—for which the Lebe organ is naturally suited—to classical and romantic music, as well as contemporary pieces. Some concerts combine the organ with other instruments (violin, cello, trumpet, voice) to offer varied programs accessible to all audiences.
A Sunday Rendezvous Throughout the Summer
The festival is organized around concerts held every Sunday at 5 PM during the months of July and August, as well as on the religious holidays of Easter, Ascension, and Pentecost. This summer programming allows residents and visitors passing through the Chaource region to enjoy privileged musical moments for free in the majestic setting of the Saint-Jean-Baptiste church. Each concert lasts about an hour and is followed by a friendly exchange with the artist.
The Saint-Jean-Baptiste Church, a Heritage Showcase
The Saint-Jean-Baptiste church of Chaource is a remarkable Gothic edifice housing numerous exceptional works of art, including a famous 16th-century Entombment composed of life-sized figures of striking realism, classified as a Historic Monument. The church itself, with its elegant vaults and luminous stained glass, provides an ideal acoustic setting for organ concerts. The association Les Amis de l'Orgue de Chaource (Friends of the Chaource Organ), led by organist Geraud Guillemot, works to preserve and promote this unique heritage instrument.
