Lyon celebrates jazz with UNESCO on April 30th
Every April 30th, on the occasion of the International Jazz Day proclaimed by UNESCO, JazzDay Lyon transforms the Lyon metropolitan area into a huge jazz stage for 24 hours. Coordinated by Jazz à Vienne since 2013, this event brings together over 200 artists and 40 venues — bars, concert halls, restaurants, MJCs, media libraries — for concerts, jam sessions, screenings, and meetings around the blues music, in Lyon, Vienne, Saint-Étienne, and throughout the region.
Since 2013, Lyon and its metropolitan area have celebrated International Jazz Day every April 30th, proclaimed by UNESCO in 2011 at the initiative of pianist Herbie Hancock. JazzDay Lyon is one of the most significant local iterations of this global event, mobilizing an impressive network of venues and artists across the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region.
JazzDay Lyon extends far beyond the city limits. Coordinated by Jazz à Vienne, the event reaches a vast territory: Lyon, Vienne, Saint-Étienne, Villefranche-sur-Saône, Bourgoin-Jallieu, and Mâcon. In 2025, over 30 concerts and events were scheduled in Lyon alone, with about thirty others spread across partner cities.
Each year, JazzDay Lyon brings together over 200 artists in nearly 40 venues with diverse identities: bars, concert halls, restaurants, MJCs, media libraries, music schools, and even hospitals, nursing homes, and day centers. This diversity of venues reflects the festival's commitment to bringing jazz to everyone, including audiences furthest from culture.
The JazzDay program blends concerts, jam sessions, exhibitions, film screenings, and educational workshops, offering a total immersion into the world of jazz and improvised music. From gypsy jazz to free jazz, from swing to electro-jazz, all styles are represented, reflecting the vitality and diversity of the regional jazz scene.
JazzDay Lyon has been coordinated since its inception by Jazz à Vienne, the association that organizes the renowned Jazz à Vienne festival. The event was born in the Lyon metropolitan area following a meeting in 2013 between Armelle Arrou (Director of UNESCO Events) and Mika Shino (Jazz Day Production Manager).
The 14th edition of JazzDay Lyon will take place on April 30, 2026, with, as every year, a full day of concerts, jam sessions, and events throughout the Lyon metropolitan area and the region. Over 200 artists and 40 venues are expected for this new celebration of International Jazz Day.
JazzDay Lyon returns on April 30, 2026, for its 14th edition, coinciding with the global celebration of International Jazz Day. In 2026, the host city for the "All-Star Global Concert" will be Chicago, led by Herbie Hancock.
In Lyon and its metropolitan area, JazzDay will mobilize, as every year, over 200 artists in about forty venues for a full day of jazz in all its forms. The program will be announced in April 2026 on the official website.
JazzDay concerts and events take place in numerous venues across Lyon and its metropolitan area. Exact addresses are announced each year on the website jazzday-lyon.com and social media.
Most venues are accessible by public transport (TCL).
The vast majority of JazzDay concerts are free. Some venues may have a voluntary contribution or a modest entrance fee.
