The festive race in the heart of the Beaujolais vineyards
Since 1997, the Marathon International du Beaujolais has become one of the most iconic sporting events in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region and one of the most festive marathons on the planet. Born from the initiative of three passionate Beaujolais runners — Christian Dechant, Jean-Luc Durafour, and Alain Bouhy — after participating in the New York Marathon in 1995, this marathon stands out for its festive spirit, wine tastings, and exceptional route through the vineyards.
The marathon (42.195 km) starts in Fleurie, in the heart of one of the most prestigious Beaujolais crus, and finishes in Villefranche-sur-Saône. The course, 95% on small roads, passes through over twelve villages and runs alongside historic castles — Corcelles, Pizay, Longsard — offering sumptuous panoramas of the wine-growing hillsides. Fifteen aid stations punctuate the course, nine of which offer wine tastings and local specialties.
The weekend offers a complete sporting program:
The Marathon International du Beaujolais welcomes runners from over 70 nationalities each year, with over 25,000 participants. Costumes are strongly encouraged, creating a unique carnival atmosphere. Musical entertainment along the course, the Saturday night party (Marathon Night), and the friendliness of the volunteers make this event more than just a race: a true celebration of the Beaujolais way of life.
Nicknamed “The Magic Charity Running Festival,” the marathon has a strong charitable commitment. The FOR HER Walk and the FOR THEM Hike raise awareness for health causes while allowing non-runners to participate in the celebration. Over 1,200 volunteers support the event each year.
The history of the marathon is one of an exceptional human adventure. In 1996, an “edition zero” brought together about forty runner friends to test the course. The first official edition welcomed nearly 400 runners. After a three-year break (2002-2004), the marathon resumed in 2005 with 900 participants and has continued to grow, becoming the major sporting event of Beaujolais and one of the most popular marathons in France.
The 22nd edition of the Marathon International du Beaujolais will take place from November 20th to 22nd, 2026. The sporting program includes:
