The crime fiction festival in the heart of Maigret's town
Since 1995, Le Chien Jaune has been the crime fiction festival of Concarneau, a town immortalized by Simenon in his eponymous novel. Every year in July, under a tent set up at Quai Carnot, the festival hosts about twenty authors, illustrators, and comic artists for three days of meetings, book signings, round tables, and workshops on crime fiction. Free and open to all, Le Chien Jaune celebrates crime fiction in all its forms in the maritime atmosphere of Concarneau.
Created in 1995 by the eponymous association, Le Chien Jaune (The Yellow Dog) takes its name from the famous novel by Georges Simenon, "Le Chien jaune," set in Concarneau. This literary nod deeply anchors the festival in the identity of this port town in Finistère. For over thirty years, the festival has brought together crime fiction enthusiasts every summer at Quai Carnot, facing the port and the Ville Close.
Each edition of Le Chien Jaune explores a different theme that guides the programming and events. In 2025, the theme was "Crime Fiction & Society"; in 2026, it will be "Crime Fiction & History." These themes allow for crime fiction to be approached from various angles and create rich debates with authors and the public, going beyond mere fiction to question the contemporary world.
For three days in July, about twenty authors, illustrators, and comic artists are hosted under a tent at Quai Carnot. The program includes book signing sessions, thematic round tables, readings and performances, workshops for young people, and special evenings, including a jazz night. All events are free and open to all, in keeping with the festival's popular appeal.
Le Chien Jaune is fully integrated into the cultural life of Concarneau. The festival organizes events throughout the year, such as "Crime Fiction & History" evenings in the town's restaurants, extending the festival's spirit beyond the three July days. The town of Concarneau, with its fishing port, fortified Ville Close, and noir atmosphere, provides an ideal setting for celebrating crime fiction.
The 32nd edition of Le Chien Jaune will be held from July 17 to 19, 2026, at Quai Carnot in Concarneau. Theme: "Crime Fiction & History." Free encounters for all audiences.
