Brittany's oldest festival, between Breton culture and maritime heritage
The Festival des Filets Bleus is more than just a festival: it's an institution of Breton culture. Born on September 10, 1905, on the initiative of Louis-Marie-Samuel Billette de Villeroche, an industrialist and the first magistrate of Concarneau, the festival was created as a charity event to help fishermen and their families affected by the sardine fishing crisis. For over a century, it has perpetuated this spirit of solidarity and popular celebration.
For five days in August, the Quai Carnot, facing the ramparts of Concarneau's Ville Close, comes alive with free open-air concerts blending Breton music, world music, variety, and contemporary music. Fest-noz evenings extend the celebration into the night. The Village de la Mer (Maritime Village) offers activities related to maritime heritage, workshops, demonstrations, and seafood tastings. Street performances, exhibitions, and children's activities complete the program.
The highlight of the festival is the Sunday morning Grand Parade, where over 2,000 participants march through the streets of Concarneau dressed in traditional Breton costumes. Celtic circles, bagadoù, folk groups, and musicians create a striking spectacle of colors and sounds, showcasing the richness and diversity of Breton regions. This parade is one of the largest in Brittany.
The Festival des Filets Bleus is inseparable from Concarneau, a historic port city and a major fishing port in southern Finistère. The event contributes to the city's cultural and tourist influence, attracting tens of thousands of visitors each year. Managed under co-presidency since 2016, the festival is driven by a team of passionate volunteers who carry on the legacy of solidarity and popular celebration initiated over a century ago.
